Having a dig around in my re-engine to diesel quest and have been 'told' VM Italy engines for 250hp and 300hp are the same as Mercruiser.

True or not?

Same base unit but marinised by the Italians not Mercruiser? Will they be as reliable as Mercruisers???

Major worry is they are about half the cost!!!!!

Is this another case of salesman bxxxxxx??

Mercruiser did use VM engines as the base for some of their diesel range, as did BMW I believe. VM engines have also been used in Range Rovers, Land Rovers, Rover cars, Lancias, Jeeps and probably a few others, so it is fair to say they are not bad engines.

VM make the engines, Mercruiser don't. VM makes engines for lots of people. At one stage the LR Disco had a VM unit.

My engines are Cummins-Mercruiser 2004.
4.2L 300 hp.

They are VM , the engine block will be the sane but that is all.
PM sent with full details on how to get a Mercruiser engine with a massive discount. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I confirm 100% reliability 106 hrs, smoke and soot free.

Recently replaced a ally cylinder head [there are 6] for my 4.2 for about 60% of M/c cost. Even much cheaper than shipping from the U.s of A. Tele. 01246 455350.{the place with the crooked spire] Dave.

V.M. are same as Mercruiser.
Had reason to buy a new one back in 2000 as a replacement for my cracked mercruiser.
Dealt with factory direct @ half the price.
Only thing was, it was ready to drop in with loom and gauges, but adapted for Volvo Penta leg.

for any ones info MTU are using the 4.2 for their small inboard range.....and all the marinised parts are the same. Im currently trying to find out the company who is marinising them for a cheaper source of parts. Will tell all when i find out

i can supply heads for approx £140 +vat , there are abount 5 different types and supplied them for
Rover sdi
ford scorpio
bmw marine
range rover
jeep cherokee
compressors
mercruisers
Any other engine part can be ordered from italy, but bottom ends are generally ok its only the cylinder heads that let the engines down, good job they are cheap to replace. One tip is if one head goes down change the lot or 2 months later !!!!
