Mercruiser Diesel vs. Volvo D4

Time will tell which one of our opinions is accurate, I know there are a lot more Cummins-Mercruiser engines around now than there was two years ago and I also note now this forum has eased up a little.
Motor Boat Monthly ran in this months issue how to winterize your engine and they chose a CM engine.
A glance on Essex Boats yard for sale stock sheets show the Balance of Volvo/Mercruiser diesels is changing.
The signs are all around, Volvo Penta must have concerns and in any event we need two competitors to keep prices down !

I am happy to agree your arguments are valid and could be accurate but at the moment I am enjoying the benefits of CM , parts are readily available as are Mercruiser or Cummins dealers (both are equally keen to help and to supply parts and service).

I hope for the sake of my investment CM continue to take market share from Volvo.

Well,

I am currently in the market for a new boat. One of the options are Dorals which have generally have had the Mercs fitted in them. They are now doing more of the Volvo new sales, but the Mercs are still more popular new. However, Second hand there is a big sticking point with the Mercs. People want Volvos, despite the Mercs being more powerful. If you check out second hand dorals, there are lots with the Merc Diesels and only 1 with the Volvos. I believe 30% are sold with the volvos. Basicaly if it has a Volvo, it sells virtualy straight away.

Personnaly I have had Merc Petrols and thought they were great. I have also had Volvo petrols and diesels without Issues as they have all been well looked after.

Unfortunately perception is everything in the boat market, and in the UK Volvos are considered a better option, so residuals are better.

For this reason I intend (at the moment) staying clear of Merc Diesels. However if I was buying a boat to last more than 5 years with me (no chance ever!) I would seriously consider the Merc Diesels. Al IMHO,

Cheers
