mercruiser alpha one gen 1

Take a look at SEI Sterndrive engineering. They are far less expensive than OEM Mercruiser drives if you want to replace. All parts are reputedly directly interchangeable.

If the drive has had a big clatter, then replacement is the best way.

I assume you have the drive upper and lower gearcases separated and the splined shaft you are talking about is the middle driveshaft - the vertical one with the water pump at its base??

Is the drive in gear if so ?

Upper and lower gear cases can be bought complete from here at a good price, even the castings alone if you feel up to rebuilding it.

As Tinkicker says, is it the splined shaft on the lower part of the drive (picture). If so have you played with the gear selector (the hooked metal piece, top right in the picture).

If it is a problem in the lower part then I would have thought it relatively straight forward to repair as there is little more than a couple of shafts and a dog-clutch in there.

Thanks yes I found the gear selector I put it in gear and all turns with no noise, good start I think! The break is half way up the top half there is a metal pipe/tube 6 inches long ish it was bent so I removed it to replace it runs down one side inside inside Ali cast tube, I will take pics it's in the welders

I guess you mean the water tube? Carries cooling water from the top of the water pump to the upper gearcase?

are we talking about the gear selector shaft has broken which attaches to the small splined shaft to the front of the drive or are we talking about the water tube that attaches via a plastic tube to the waterpump.as of yet were guessing as no pictures have been uploaded.none of this would have happened if you invested in a chartplotter which tells you where the wrecks are.a good investment would have been the hei drive as stated above .new and with a 3 year warranty so long as it doesn't hit something hard.look here;http://www.sterndrive.cc/
