I have had to empty the diesel fuel tank on my Sea Ray this weekend and will soon re fill it. Do i then have to bleed the air out of the system and if so, does anyone know how to do it on this particular engine?
There is a bleed screw on the filter housing on the engine, you pump primer button until you get just diesel from it, then close it and it should fire up.
Its likely you will have to bleed the system if any air has got into the fuel inlet pipe to the engine. Once this goes through the pump - the engine will stop.
You dont say how you "emptied the tank" - so its impossible to say whether or not you will need to bleed, but my guess would be that you will need to do so.
The principle of bleeding is much the same on most boats, normally you release a bleed screw (often on the top of the fuel filter) and then manually use the hand pump on the engine to pump diesel through the filters until the air has all been released from the released screw and you have a steady flow of diesel.
Some engines (eg Volvo) have a separate "air bleed screw" but on many other based engines (particularly ford based) you just loosen the screws that hold the fuel filter.
Lastly - it sounds to me as if you dont have an owners manual? I'd make strenuous efforts to get one as they are worth their weight in gold for items such as your question.
