Hi, Sorry if this isnt posted in the right place!

I have a 3.0 mercruiser 1993 engine and it seems to have gotten a severe engine oil leak, After using all day sunday i pulled her out the water, pulled the drain plug and noticed a heavy flow of oil i would say 2 litres!!!
I have inspected the engine to try and locate a leak and there are no signs of leaking... even when running, But... Im not sure theres any oild left in her as the dipstick is dry (didnt notice until after running the engine)
There is oil residue on the front side of the engine over the pulleys etc but nothing to write home about, and the rear of the the engine is pretty much completeley oil free, this leads me to believe the problem is around the pulleys somewhere?? But where?
I have done a web search and people are coming up with the timing cover me rusted through!

This is as far as i have gotten so far?

Any help please?

James

I think the first step might be to top up with oil, run it, and watch for leaks again, if its producing that much in one trip it must be visible!

I decided to get of my arse and start taking stuff apart... took all pulleys off, altinator and steering pump and noticed a gaping hole in the timing cover!!!
Anyone know where i can source a timing cover?

not sure where to get a cover cheaply ebay may be worth a shot, but make sure you find out what caused the gapping hole before you replace it.

if I recall correctly when I owned this engine, the cause is usually the water circulation pump leaking on to the plate

I think it was caused by a previous leak to the waterpump, There has been no signs of any water leaks... Not 100% happy about all this as i only bought the boat a month or so ago pffft.

Thanks for the link, I have found 2 so far online... roughly £140 inc VAT, Think im going to need a timing cover fitting kit too.... cant find this at the moment but will make some calls tomo!

you can always buy some jb weld to fix it.look on ebay.
the cover is a bit of a pain to get off as the damper has to be pulled off and the chance is your engine has the mounting towards the front of the engine which will involve the engine being pulled and the drive too.jb weld will fix it but i hope the engine has not had a seizure on the crankshaft etc .the jb weld is oil fuel and waterproof to 300 degrees c. look here; http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/J-B-STIK-...ools_Levels&hash=item438d7eca78#ht_1379wt_907

Thanks for the info... Already have the old cover of and the new one sat here ready to install tomo... have made a frame that sits on the top of the boat to support engine, Front mount removed sump lowered slightly... All i need is new bolts for cover and job done!!!
Sump is completely rust free btw!! :):)

I like it.Hope you make sure that its realigned b4 putting the drive back on.
Hope you did pull the drive as the shaft goes through the gimbal bearing and into the hub thats rubber mounted on your flywheel.
if you leave it out of alignment it can destroy the gimbal the hub and then its an engine out job to change it.

This was my next question!!!!! Darn, i hope i havnt damaged anything, i didnt take the drive out. I only moved the engine up/down by around 10mm, I have run the engine and im getting a big vibration through the boat... Alignment tool needed.

just knew that the shortcut would be done so lets see if you haven't bent the shaft.once you get the tool the alignment is no more than a light push to get it in with your thumbs.plenty if videos on youtube and explanations to watch.you will need to select forward disconnect your speedo tube with a push and 90 degree twist.remove 6 nuts and remove hydraulic cylinders to rear of drive.may be best to loosen the front nuts of cylinders and tie them up out the way.a good hard pull or bang the skeg on a piece of 4"x2" on the ground normally gets it moving.you'll also need a gasket set which has o rings and a gasket and a shaft seal within.

The timing cover for this engine can cost over $130.00, but Advanced Auto parts has one for under $20.00, but it's made in China, but it worked great on my engine. the only thing missing on it is the timing inditor, which you can cut off and steal from old one. The part is 6092188-998 china 11338 It worked for me and I saved a lot of money! Johns boat
