Mercruiser 220hp Diesel

Superb response on the GM thread, many thanks.
Could you give me your opinion and advice on the Mercruiser 220 turbo straight six Diesel please? Been offered a pair.

My boat used to have these but she needed more power and were upgraded to the 4.2 L 300 hp (same engine).

As far as I am aware they are good engines, and a pleasure to own compared to smokey volvos.

Incredibly smooth, good smoke free start, no soot on stern even after 200 nm rough trip, tender stays clean I would not hesitate in buying them.

I had 2 x 180hp in my Broom 33 and was delighted with them. As said below, quiet, smooth and smoke free.
However, people are still suspicious of them and tend to prefer VP if available as an alternative.

I think the engines are fine, only issue is the leg, a friend if mine broke two under warranty and then had to upgrade to the xp version... I think there’s just to much torque for the legs to cope with... Shafts are probably fine

If you do fit them make sure your engine bay is dry, my mate had one and the sump rusted away, his one was made of mild steel, not ally. check before you buy'

Cant rate them highly enough. Think you will find the Bravo2 leg is bullet proof not so the 3. As has been stated before 220hp from 4.2 mills makes for low stress.

I had a pair in my BMB330 4.2L 220's and thought they were great. Not noisy but louder, a growly throaty sound compared to a similar Volvo.

Often heard neg rumours but usually from Volvo fans. Service costs almost exactly the same. 4.2 Merc v's 3.6 Vp means less tuned so not working as hard for the same power out.

I thought this was a logical choice.
