Hi I have a mercedes om 616 diesel engine in my yacht that is approximately 20 years old and is 66hp. I would like to get a spare starter motor and solenoid and I was told by previous owner the engine was same as mercedes 240 d car of this era, however not everything he told me has turned out to be accurate!!!!

I cannot see a number on the starter motor as there is a lot of corrosion but the engine has serial number 6160110601ME, Anybody know how I can find out if this is same starter as the car as I have seen plenty for sale quite cheap on Ebay but want to be sure i am buying correct one. yacht is in Spain that complicates matters slightly

Many thanks in advance

Serial number indicates it is indeed OM616 engine as used also in Mercedes 240d W123 amongst other vehicles. To determine which starter to use why not measure the old one and reference the part number from below and then buy the right one from ebay

Start motor

Yes, the 240D starter fits fine. Also the 300D motor - that's what I put on mine when the solonoid failed.

I have kept the old one and fitted an external starter solonoid dug out of a friends shed.

OM636 for Westerly 33. optimum rev speed

what is the optimum rev speed for the OM 636 engine. I am concerned at running at too low a revs (1100) Due to possibility over carbonizing the engine. please advise..
