For mappy/charty types who might find it interesting -
A book I found a very interesting read was Nicholas Crane's "Mercator, the Man Who Mapped the Planet". A biography of Gerard Mercator (who I assume forumites have at least heard of /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif).
I see that there is also another around by Andrew Taylor and with a similar but not the same title, which I could not comment on but may be just as good.
