Menorquin 160 - what do you think?

I was wondering what the forum's opinion is on these boats.

From what I have seen, the have:
+ Huge interior space
+ Very attractive price
+ Beautiful woodwork in interior, and great built quality in general
+ No Slamming in head seas

but, also:
- Slow cruising speed (15-16 kn)
- Rolly polly in a beam sea
- Limited cockpit space (for a 53 footer) because of the shape of the stern.
- Too Retro?

What do you guys think?
 
I looked at one of these briefly in Majorca (surprise) and I thought it was gorgeous but seemed very expensive to me and as you say quite slow for the engine size so likely to guzzle fuel
 
Don't know anything about the merits of their seakeeping but I've seen a couple in Spain and I think they look good. Except for the funny bit sticking out the back ! What's that all about ?
 
Yeah, it does look odd but the rounded aft end does'nt give enough lift for planing so they had to extend the hull. So, basically what you've got is a retro looking displacement hull type boat above the water sitting on a modern(ish) planing hull below the water. Bit of a fraud really
 
It only achieves 16-18knots max with 2 x 370hp engines. I guess this is due to its weight but thats less than other similar sized boats might achieve and suggests that the hull is perhaps more SD than planing. My guess is that it wont achieve more than 0.5 - 0.7mpg at a cruising speed of 13-15knots which is hardly economical
Obviously if you cruise at displacement speeds, then the economy will be a lot better
 
Deleted User, I don't find them expensive.
The 160 lists for 360k euros with a lot of gear as standard (but not the flybridge).
These are semi-disp boats with a displacement indeed comparable to other SD boats rather than planning boats of the same size.
SD boats are usually more expensive than planning boats, arent they?
 
Andis a quick look at the Boats for Sale section of this website brings up 3 used 160's at €500k+ so how are you getting a list of €360k?
I dont think SD boats should be more expensive than planing boats, in fact quite the opposite as fast planing boats usually have bigger engines
 
Deleted User, I am sure of the price of 360 euros (+vat, that is).
You can see the price in the press reviews the menorquin site has links to.
In fact, I was offered an even more attractive quotation by their dealer.
I don't know why people are asking half a million euros for used boats.

Their 180 - with the twin 715hp engines and 18kt cruise - is listed at €600k.
Not as cheap, but besides the big engines it's a 18mx5.5m boat with a diplacement of 30 tons.

I still consider these as value for money, don't you?
 
Saw a lot of these in san tropez (i think there must be a dealer there} during the summer the woodwork looks stunning
Personally I dont like the look of them
I saw one leaving san trop at speed and ive got to say it loked good on the water and seemed to be able to shift ok
Why not charter one for a week before you take the plunge
 
Andis if thats the price or less for a new 16m boat, that sounds very attractive
 
Charted one of these in Menorca, needed to take out 20 people for the day (charted 2) 10 on each boat, LOADS of room. both had skippers who were delighted with the boats. seakeeping seemed good though you only really know in testing conditions. I would advise if your serious why not charter one for the weekend and go have a play. talk to the guys who own them. in the scale of things the worst you can do is have fun.
