Reading the Sardinia thread which threw up the mention of Fornells, prompted me to post this. I have a villa booked here in August.

I was wondering if you guys had any suggestions for places to eat, visit, beaches etc? I haven’t visited Menorca since Diana of Cape Town days so I imagine things are a tad different.

All suggestions will be greatfully received

Thanks

Hi Diana

We used to spend every holiday there when our girls were young and Louise and I went over again last last year and to be honest it hasn't changed at all!

Restaurant wise the larger established ones in Fornells are as good as it gets. You will get good but not exceptional food, they all seem to claim that the, previous, King of Spain ate there but haven't seen any evidence to support it (unlike Port Petit in Cala D'Or which actually has a photo of him with the Chef/Owner)

We like the restaurants on the quayside in Cuitedella but as much for the ambience and location as quality of food - don't get me wrong, it's fine stuff but pretty straightforward.

The Port of Mahon is a bit of a mixed bag, the only restaurant I would recommend would be Il Puerto. La Minerva on the floating pontoon used to have a good reputation but we were v disappointed last time. There used to be an outstanding Thai restaurant down there too but Im not sure it's still there.

We stayed at Alucufar Vell, near Sant Luis and their restaurant was very good, and worth seeking out. Nearest we have ever got to fine dining in Menorca.

Regarding beaches, just take your pick! Some in the South West corner that are down rough tracks are lovely. Torquetta, Macarella but can get busy.

We spend our time in Mallorca now we have the apartment but still love Menorca. It's pace of life is good for the soul. I'm sure you will enjoy it

As said on the other thread
If you do nothing else you must go to dinner at the Chinese/Jap Restaurant - Way in Mahon - you won't regret it.
Their Sashimi is the best.
We have met some friends here in Carloforte who also agree it is a great restaurant.
Apparently, the guy who plays the piano in the restaurant is the resident boating guru in Mahon - knows everything and where to get it.

In Fornells itself I think the best restaurant is Es Cranc - http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Restau..._Cranc-Fornells_Minorca_Balearic_Islands.html and would agree with MedDreamer that the others in Fornells are a mixed bag and also with Hurricane on 'Way' in Mahon which is very good indeed.

Another interesting option might be Cap Roig (between Mahon and Fornells) which is one of the best restaurants on the island (IMHO). In fact there's a 400 year old coastal footpath which circumnavigates the island that they've spent years (and no doubt lots of EU €'s!!) refurbishing and it's recently reopened. You can walk either from Mahon or from Es Grau along the clifftops to the restaurant which sits high above the sea and has more or less 270deg views. More importantly the food is absolutely outstanding and, more importantly even than that...., so's the cellar!! Here are a couple of useful links;

Only thing is that in August it might be a bit hot so possibly something to do on an overcast day (if you have one!) and probably not suitable for young kids (if you have any!). Just a thought anyway...

Thanks Guys for all your input. I thought Id written but don’t see it?

Anway we wil certainly look up Fornells for Es Trenc and the Cap Roig. Mahon will be visited one nightt as wel so we can lookup Il Puerto or the Chinese place epending on what we feel like. Anyone been to the Gin factory? I guess we should have some whlst we are there/

Hi Diana
Restaurant Match will be in Mahon beginning and mid august so if the timing works out come on board for lunch/swim/dinner. I'll email you when dates are fixed, but current plan is to be in Mahon/cuitadella maybe 30/31 July + 1 Aug, and then again 14 August

John that sounds great, never had a bad meal on Resto Match! So please do keep me posted. I arrive 13th and stay till the 22nd. Mates turn up the 15th. I’ve a couple of days in a hotel before the villa.

Ah ok well we should put afternoon/evening of 14th in diary then. My rough plan is

Friday 14/8 - be in Alcudia area, guests leave boat 0830 for PMI airport. My brother's boat then heads straight to Antibes 275nm@8kts= 35hrs; Match crosses to Menorca. Meet you 14/8 for lunch/afternoon?
Friday night 14/8 we will berth in Menorca (Cuitadella or Mahon) or even just anchor in the entrance to Mahon north side
Saturday very early 15/8 we set off for Antibes hoping to catch up with my brother for the last hour or so.

As ever depends on last minute weather etc etc

Where is your hotel?

The plan was to stay either in the La Quinta near Cuitadella or the Hotel Can Faustino which is actually in Cuitadella. I haven’t booked either yet as I ran out of time and I’m now in hospital with a new knee. So it matters not really and I have a car, .... but would like to avoid using it that day if possible.

If I stay in Cuitadella and so do you its v convenient, or if you prefer Mahon then I can stay at that end. My villa is on the north coast nr Fornells. I can hold off booking for a while yet or book at both ends and cancel one!

The date is in the diary, I shall look forward to it.

OK, roger all that. Will report back after a week of berth booking emailing shenanigans, which is about to start. Cuitadella is nice. Good luck with knee fixing/get well soon x
