Off shortly for a 'proper' week's holiday to Menorca with my girlfriend. Would like to rent a dinghy locally for a day's sailing around the harbour or a bay or two. Any suggestions as to where I can do this (without being fleeced)?

The only dinghy sailing I've seen round Menorca is in fornells, its a few years since i was last there so this may have changed. I did not try it myself as it was very expensive (this also may have changed) i was going to hire a windsurfer but they said i needed instruction or proof of windsurfing qualifications of which i have none ..........suppose in these days of litigation experience and board ownership at home counts for nowt.

Minorca Sailing is the absolute dog's danglies. I had a week there about 5 years ago. Lot's of helpers and instructors. Every boat is in tip-top condition. Definitely not expensive for a week's accommodation and a week's intensive dinghy sailing. Usual thing; no connection; just a satisfied customer.

I don't know about just hiring something for a few hours though. I didn't see any sign that they are geared up to that.

Menorca Sailing have the latest best equipment and pay for qualified instructers to give instruction for people booking a dinghy or windsurfing week or 2 week holiday.

As you can imagine they just love turn ups that just want to borrow their latest bit of kit for a few hours and pay a little money. They are happy therefore to always lend their equipment to anyone of dubious character and dubious ability and without any insurance - after all the latest Wayfarer only comes in about £8k.

Many places though do cheap weeks at both ends ofthe holiday period.

We are booked into Sunsail - Greece for 27th April next year for 2 weeks. Be good to go back to windsurfing and some intense dinghy racing.

I started my sailing life at Menorca Sailing in 1990 and had a fantastic 2 weeks. I met many then who had frequent holidays at Menorca Sailing. Nothing I have heard since make me think that the high standards have changed.

That's not how the journo from the Indy was treated.

I fink I'll just liberate a lonely little yacht in the harbour instead...

:)
