As posted previously Enjoying the Menai straits out from port dinorwic. Have a 16’ Microplus. At high tide Up to 2 hours either side how far both directions can I go safely keeping to the speed limits. Recently went past plas newydd into sight of the Brittania bridge. Other direction into sight of the hotel by Victoria docks. Anything to worry about in that stretch and can I go further each direction on a reasonably high tide? Novice question but Is there a good chart or reference book I can get which keeps me safe. Looking to explore more next season so will do the research over winter and keep our trips short at the moment. Just enjoying mooring up and having a beer/cup of tea at the moment!

Llandwyn to the South, Puffin to the North. in two hours you can traverse either end of the strait, spend an hour at the destination and return to your berth at a leisurely pace during winter. At 20 knt with a 4 hour window you can get as far as Porth Wen/ Cemaes to the North and Portdinllaen to the South and return. But that's a waste. I'd look to put it on a mooring over the weekend and enjoy whole days out if you cant over night.

Thanks. Actually nearly got into trouble this morning with a sandbank near Victoria docks quite near high tide. I’m going to study some maps As I should have done before heading out. Lesson learned.

Yes My fault today but a little difficult to follow in the straits when first couple of times out I have found. I need to get the map out so I have a rough idea so I can find them a little easier. Once I have that knowledge never have a problem. May ask the lads at the marina for rough guidance.

To answer the first bit
Your boat and engine will go anywhwere at anytime in the confines of the Strait
Weather permitting, ie wind against tide in some places can cut up a bit tasty for a boat of your size
There is enough water even through the Swellies at Low Water Springs
Although some bouys need moving a bit (always do in the Strait especially caernarfon bar) if you follow the bouyed channel in your Micro you will be ok, ref depth
You have loads of access time out of the Basin at Felin
You will see that as you get used to the place
Remember to start with, because where you are berthed in the Basin
To look at the 'gabions' (stones in baskets!) at the entrance
The limit for now for you is ---
4 and a half 'showing' that will give you enough depth to get in or out
I have a spare chart if you want
So you can at least do a little plan before you go , do some basic bearings etc
Jump in a rib some time and I can blast you up and down the place and give you some info and clues etc
You can stick some fuel in and get 40 fags from Tesco!
:D:D

Thanks rich. I’ll drop you a text perhaps we can sort something. Once I have been shown the best way I’ll never look back. I’ll grab that chart off you as well if I can as everywhere seems sold out of the paper charts! Downloaded charts and will review as well. Loving Port Dinorwic. Conwy very good to us and understanding by the way.
