Men are from Neptune, women are from 34 Acasia Drive.

Absolutely! Single handed male sailors tend to be needy, turn up at mealtimes and are just that bit too strange.

Or just too fugly or too much of a nerd for any female to want to be on the same ocean with, let alone in the same boat. They are the reasons I sail on my own. At least you lot have a SWMBO who doesn't want to go sailing. I just have a box of electronic bits and a grumpy cat for company.

Git. I don't even have a cat :(

I think it's a common thing I konw there are some better halves who enjoy it but it's not that common. Mine has tried but she just doesn't enjoy it that much. She says there are other things she would prefer to be doing and that s fair enough. I can't think of many things I'd rather be doing. She doesn't stop me doing it so it works well. We even tried a sailing holiday last year on a 44 ft jeanneau in Majorca but it had to be followed by 4 nights in a 4* hotel. She enjoyed the sailing but liked the time ashore better and preferred the 4 nights in the hotel. At least she gave it a go but she says she wouldn't do it again.

We're doing pretty much the same thing this year. How was the sailing there? We have seven days... Any recommendations for places to visit, anchor etc

I'm just about to drag 'er indoors away on the boat. As is so very common, she only started sailing after we met and had I not put the idea of going away sailing then it would never have happened.
However, she has been very enthusiastic and supportive of the trip. I do believe the fact we're only going for two years and have a return date in mind is comforting to her, I doubt she would want to go away indefinitely!

ever watched double jeopardy? if the on-board nightcap tastes bitter dont drink it.

My own observations agree with the OP - men and women do have different attitudes to sailing. My SWMBO comes along with me in summer and has done for 20 odd years but she takes little part in sailing the boat despite doing the YM theory, and is much more interested in the destination than in the journey. Whats more the mast has to be fairly near upright and the weather quite good so the deal is that I race with the lads in winter and sail slowly in summer with her.

I half remember a lecture about the different biochemistry of the two sexes and the different chemicals our bodies released under stress. In the case of men, the result was excitement, aggression, happiness. For women the result was fear, depression, desire to flee. These are built in responses that come from our animal origins and are present to different degress in all of us. In short the thrash to windward against a nice force 4 that the men like and enjoy is misery for most women and being rational ( up to a point) they dont wish to repeat it. Has a similar effect on the roads where young men excited by speed take far more risks than young women

No doubt some medic will come along and correct the finer points of what I have written but the gist of it is as above.
I would go with this explanation. Of course there is an overlap in biochemistry between males and females, but in general men seem more likely to do things that are scary and may hurt or kill them. Sometimes sailing is scary or exciting depending on your makeup. Simples!

I remember reading one of the entries for a BBC short story competition. She'd been willing when they'd first cast off for a gypsy life, but as the trip progressed, he'd become increasingly tyranical and she fantasized more and more about shoving him over the side. When their boat was sinking mid atlantic, she was first in the liferaft and pulled the steps in so he couldn't follow. HTH
