Both of the above are similarly priced in the google app store at a hefty £46 -49. i wanted to try out a basis chart based plotter on my Google nexus. Can anyone offer a recommendation for one or other please? Are these the best options or are there cheaper options available which would provide good detail charts for UK and Ireland.
The nexus has a built in GPS so as far as I can see i just need a basic cartography app (with charts). not interested in AIS, Radar etc

Thanks

I have MMap- it works on laptop, with a better specced nav prog and on my Xoom 10" android its fine too, (you get permissions for both) low power consumption is the key, less than 1 amp against 3/4amp
No experience of Navionics-

I agree, mxmariner is cheaper and better in my experience. The charts are definitely clearer and more detailed in the bits I usually sail in. Not necessarily the same as more as accurate of course but I think they're Admiralty charts licenced from UKHO.

Last night I downloaded mxmariner and a UK chart pack. Total price about £7. Raster charts but works for me on my nexus 7

Thanks for that

The app itself seems reasonably priced but there is a line in the description saying "charts available as an in-app puchase", which made me a little wary. if the whole deal came to £7 that seems pretty keen.

Hope its a nexus 7 - navionics wont work on the nexus 10

If all you want is basic cartography then all the UK hydroigraphic office charts are available as raster for about £20 with a plotter program called GPS nautical on google play. Good value but the program is limited to not a lot more than showing your position and track.

Unless I am mistaken memory map is a raster program and navionics is vector - vector is much better for chartplotter ops in my view and its also available from C map. I have downloaded the cmap app plus one detailed chart FOC and it seems OK but not as comprehensive as navionics is

Memory map is unstable on my galaxy, zooming between chrts is awful, setting routes near on impossible and zero support. Worst apllication I have ever bought!

Navionics platinum on the chart plotter comes with a free pc app which is wonderful and yes Navionics do respond to queries ... no complaints from me.

Is there anywhere online where it gives the prices of the various chart packs?
I couldn't find a description anywhere so based on the comment from Davey above I went for it - the chart packs have divided the british and irish coast into 4 areas all available as seperate downloads at much the same price of around €4 - probably £3.50 or so in sterling. I went for chart pack 3 which covers west coast of Ireland and it seems west coast scotland.

Raster charts which seem to work fine on nexus 7 - cant really go wrong at that money.

I'm looking to load my nexus with charts for a trip to the Baltic.

Navionics requires two packs -UK and Netherlands and Denmark and Greenland, ie nearly £100

Does the MXmariner do the Western Baltic ? If not can anybody suggest any alternative to navionics?

Mmap is stable on my xoom, if limited in pplanning.

I must say support for me was very good, several instant email replies to talk me through migrating THREE year old charts from win mobile for no charge!

Credit where due-

MBY this month did a review of charting on tablets- albeit only Ipad. I only skimmed it, but it seemed Navionics was way ahead of the game, even though it was more pricey.
