(Apologies for the double posting - I suddenly realised this is probably a better forum to be asking this question)

Having slept on my basic foam bed on my boat for a few months now I'm starting to ache and I think I should be laying a memory foam matress top layer, though my double bed is an odd shape (of course).

Anyone have any ideas on where I can get some memory foam custom cut and delivered? Or do you have any alternative solutions I should be considering?

There was an article in ST magazine about this recently, don't think I have that one anymore but they'll probably oblige with the info.

When I redo our forecabin (imminent) that is a must do on my list too! I've tried memory foam and it's great!

Be interested in the replies you get. Sleeping on our matteress is only one up from sleeping on sandbags! I wake up every morning with back-ache or sciatica or both. I don't know if its me - pushing 60, or the bed, although it doesn't happen at home.

The mates now bought a big sheet of foam which is flat on one side and like an egg carton on the other. She cut it to fit the bunk, made a cover and it lays on top of the (sandbags). Nice and warm I have to say, and sort of reduces the back ache, but not there yet, still needs something else if I'm going to sleep on it 9 months a year.

The stuff was advertised in one of these little catalogues that come in the Saturday papers. Maybe Sundays too - don't have Sunday papers.

Hawke House Marine do a composite of memory foam and normal foam and their fitting is excellent. They did all my berths and seats and I am delighted with them (Only the berths include memory foam )

Plan B - check out the Practical Reader to Reader forum cos I posted the same question there and got some good responses. So far I have received positive replies off the following companies regarding custom made matress overlays:

www.comfort-solutions.co.uk
www.justbuyonline.co.uk
www.mattresses-beds.co.uk
www.raskelf.com (this one gets rated in loads of sailing mags)

I'll update you on any progress. I've asked for quotes on covers and delivery times too.

Thanks for that Demonboy. No time to check all the forums usually but I've had a look and set the mate on to follow-ups.

If you are a Costco member they have memory foam matresses in single, double, queen and king sizes for about £150 for a king size. They used to be vacuum packed, but I saw this evening they are now sold rolled up. They all have a soft cotton cover. It would be easy to get a pair and join them to fit a shaped berth
