Oooh how my back is now starting to ache, having slept on my rubbish foam bed on my boat for a few months now. The answer can only be to lay a memory foam matress top layer, though my double bed is an odd shape (of course).

Anyone have any ideas on where I can get some memory foam custom cut and delivered? Or do you have any alternative solutions I should be considering?

Costco sell memory foam mattress toppers 3" for I think about £75 double bed size they come vacuum packed and take about 3 days to fully recover once the vacuum is released. You could get two, join them and then cut to shape
I got one for our bed at home which was too firm earlier in the year, its made an amazing difference.

I have also seen them oneBay

Nothing to do with memory foam ....... but we have fitted the IKEA wooden slats (€20 a pack) under our double berth (2 packs) and have never slept better!! One month sailing this summer, no bad backs and no condenation issues.

An alternative???

Had 2 proper matresses made by York bedding, very reasonable.Made a brown paper template,if for a V berth as they are 8inches thick, make the template fit the V berth 4inches up, off the base, this will then make it fit pretty good. You want the soft type you can then fold it to get thro. doors etc. Dont know tel. no. but directory enquiries should know.

we were on holiday in Bodrum in June. Not sure about memory foam but there were lots of little workshops making foam products for boats and hotels. Seemed to be lots on the main road out towards the Aquapark (sorry dont know number) We bought empty beanbags at one like the ones we had enjoyed on the beach. Had a great time in Bodrum. Sailed Lasers and Darts in one of the next resorts but had to make do with motoring on a Gulet. Would you take paying guests for a sail if we return?

Hi Ian

Yep, it's something we are considering anyway. This season is spent getting to know the territory so next year we'll be taking paying guests, easing ourselves into the skippered chartering world gently!

Unfortunately the gulet skippers seem intent on racing each other and generally break every colreg in the book. One rarely sees a gulet with all its sails out.

Anyway, please do keep my email on record (info@spannerheadz.com). Send me a quick message so I have your email and please do consider a return trip to Bodrum, this time on a proper sailing boat! The winds are so consistent it really is sailing heaven out here.

I think the IKEA slats are called "Ottaman" but cant remember for sure. They come in different widths and I bought two packs of 80cm for my double berth.
They come with two strips of plasticcy rubbery stuff with pockets at each end into which the slats fix; the slats are about 4mm thick and are curved so the middle is about 1cm off the berth with the no load. I have fixed the two strips of plasticcy stuff to the plywood base of the berth using "poppers" obtained from my local sprayhood/sail cover maker; this enables to un-pop and roll back the slats for access to batteries, seacocks e.t.c. which are under the berth.
I have found the slats to be really comfortable and also this winter when sleeping on the boat we boticed that there was no damp under the mattress in the mornings.
Let me know if you want me to PM you some pictures. The cost here in Italy was (I think) €20 a pack, and each pack was enough for 2m X 80cm.

Other items from IKEA Marine: aluminium cooker surround to prevent kids tipping hot pans on themselves, which I modified to use as a back and sides shield to prevent heat from marking woodwork. Also IKEA do a good floor mat about 50cm X 30cm which is non-slip and seems to collect all the hairs e.t.c. at the bottom of the companionway steps (cost 2 or 3 euros). Anybody who wants more info please PM me and I'll look at the Ikea names next time on the boat (tomorrow!).

Re: and don\'t forget.....

....the Ikea bags which must be the cheapest, large, strong bags to use when you're taking everything to and from the boat.
