Hi, For the first two weeks in September we are in Greece, sailing the Sporades out of Volos. Does anyone have information regarding the forecasting of strong meltemis that may be on the way, strong enough to keep you in? Thanks

To the best of my knowledge, Septembers are very kind months and you should be ok. Also, that area tends to get less affected - compared to central/East Aegean.

Possibly due to global warming (or otherwise) the weather pattern has changed in the last few years and nobody is quite following it... with great certainty.

This coming summer, as it is supposedly gonna be very hot, will also be a good year for venturing into the Aegean, with limited winds...again, supposedly!

I live in Greece by the way, so I've been following the weather. Sporades is pretty and safe, and september is a good choice.

Utterly impossible to predict, especially in recent years. Two years ago the Dodecanese in July was flat calm. My son was there on my boat and motored throughout his holiday. Last year the meltemi had started in early June and blew strongly. In the past week on Chios we have had thunderstorms, hailstorms and cold northerly winds. Anything might happen!

Meltemi is not the only concern. We had very strong katabatics at night in Panormou Bay (Skopelos E. side) Its a wonderful natural harbour but the steep sides encourage the katabatics. Also Alonissos town harbour; we had a reading of 36kts at night. I know, 'cos we were anchored and I had to sit up all night!
