How can you spot a 'Meldrew' at sea?

For those that missed the Radio 4 discussion, link to

One sign - tender inserted alonside to discourage rafting up.
Or, cockpit tent erected on fine summer evening

This Meldrew thing is rather a clever....

...ploy on our leader Alastair Campbell's part.

Say anything against government policy or complain about anything and strasight away out comes the "Meldrew" label, ready to be slapped on the free thinker's back.

Cunning these Blairites aren't they?

Sit there with a silly grin on your face, prepared to take the next absurdity without comment for fear of being branded a "Meldrew" and you will survive in the new Britain.

Steve Cronin

at risk of course of the label myself for this from those who's low interlect needs its regular shot of getting one over on someone else. Sad bast ards

I will not be walked over by these pillocks and I will complain very loudly, if that makes me a "Meldrew" then I'm bloody proud of it!

Yes, mabe all yotties are inherently Meldrews. Certainly the anti-regulation brigade; lets enjoy the space with minimum interference from Tony B's lot. Distrust of do-good organisations get similar scorn from many - ref RYA and RNLI Seacheck threads.
Yup, I think we are Meldrews

Must admit to a dislike of the RYA, but I guess some body is required, I agree with Seacheck, it's a voluntary thing and does bring to light some shortcomings. But I haven't used the services of either. Although I must sometime to get "qualified" ie. ICC. Must do that sometime, want to go up the Rhone, hace to get my CEVNI thingy aswell! Maybe I wont bother with the Rhone, drive up and collect my wine!

What about the yottie's inherent pessimism.

Back-up GPS and VHF, alternative ports to divert to, main halyard attached in case engine fails, engine spares. Yes, we are definitely Meldrews.

Contrast that to the Jetski owner who dashes 5 miles of shore with barely a mobile phone.

Poor service, inward focus, appalling organisation ... I've suffered them all in the the UK since Saturday

3 hours Sat AM to get out of an appalling Gatwick
4.5 hours today to get hold of my travel insurance to see if we're still covered now because of my youngest daughter's diabetes

Contrast that with the service culture & friendliness abroad (see another thread) and I'm not surprised we're all moaning minnies ... action is what we need... get rid of the politicians & get Alec Ferguson to run the country with Alan Hanson as chancellor.
