According to the original specification of my Nicholson 39, the internal joinery is teak veneer which has been "melamined" - a term which puzzles me. As there are some spots and water blemishes on some of the woodwork, I would like advice as to how to treat the wood surface. Can anyone help? What is the best treatment, how or where can I get hold of melamine polish? I have been warned not to varnish the surfaces.
Thanks in advance
Pete

Melamine lacquer

is a cellulose-based 'varnish'. i get mine from craft supplies, millers dale, derbyshire. being a different chemical composition you can't varnish over it. i use a polish i make up from genuine turpentine and beeswax but any wax furniture polish will do.

Silvatana is the answer...

to the problem of revarnishing the interiors of certain Nicholsons. Our former boat was a Nic 35 and had this melamine. We have asked C&N, who still had an after sales service for older Nics at the time, and they told us to slightly sand the melamine down and revarnish with any wood varnish we wanted. We found that Silvatana, a product by Trimetal (which is owned by Akzo-Nobel, www.akzonobel.com). It just gave this fantastic eggshell finish we wanted, the same one originally ment by C&N.

We now own a Nic48 and we are doing the same thing. It might be a little bit difficult to locate an outlet for Silvatana. Once you find one you will find that they keep a good stock of Silvatana. Best is to put a layer of gloss on first and than add a layer of eggshell. It dries fast and does not need sanding between layers if you are quick enough.

Good luck
