Well, having made it around the coast from Great Yarmouth we ended up at Chatham Maritime Marina, a brand new MDL place, and very swanky too! I have to say the staff have all been extremely pleasant and helpful, even going so far as to lend an old River Medway chart and photocopying an old guide book when they learnt I was going to explore the non-tidal section. The marina is perfectly equipped and the facilities are superb.

I got a little worried when I found that no-one I spoke to had ever been up the river, but put this down to 'big boat' syndrome, and so set off.

The trip to Allington was fine, though the fee exorbitant (£40 because I was there a little over a week, and £5 for a bridge key, plus £15 for a lock handle from the marina up the river).

From Allington things just got worse, fast. A couple of prop-strikes told me that, though the depth was about 5ft, there were many obstructions in the water, but on reaching the first lock I was horrified to find that despite the lock being deepish (7ft or so), there was only one ladder, right at the downstream corner. The other locks I have visited have been the same.

So, I can only navigate these locks with the boat facing upriver! It's hard enough being single-handed on a seven ton boat without having to reverse the ****ng thing through locks going downstream (which I shall have to do at the end of this week!). To add to this misery there's bad shoaling downstream of the locks so the astern maneouvre out is going to be tricky!

Then there was the issue of moorings. Telephoning ALL the marinas on the river, I was told they were all full or didn't take visitors. Eventually, I was offered a mooring at one, only to arrive and find it was a towpath mooring with all the attendant security worries. The next day I pleaded and begged another marina to take me in, and they did. Cruising up to said location, the marinas on the way all had free berths!

So, what had been planned to be a straightforward solo trip for a couple of days' relaxation turned into a real git of a trip.

Anyone fancy a ride in a nice boat from Twyford down to Chatham at the end of this week? You'll have to help with the locks though!

Oh you poor modern boater, The medway above Allington lovley countryside
peacful and still fairly hassell free, have you tried the hell of the over regulated upper Thames, i know which i prefer.

We've paddled our canoe on the non-tidal medway; gave up after being bombarded by yobs using 2 litre plastic bottles filled with water. Now looking to buy steel cruiser - anyone know a good source for crossbows?

misery! You mean a free test of stamina !

Ooops. The Medway is a bit on the shallow side in certain parts up river .Books claim about 1.5m on average but Southern Water are very reluctant to dredge due to lack of cash.Beginning of season is always the worst time for boats which draw a bit of water. As for the locks yes they will nacker you in short order if you are alone.Done the trip to Tonbridge a few times and have got a bad back + lumps out the prop to prove it.Cunning plan is to always offer people nice river trip but forget to mention lock gate workouts.Lock at Yalding is worst because of depth.
If you come down river throught Chatham over weekend there is an air display and various demos by army etc.River may be closed every 30mins or so.
if you see a Princess 33 and a geezer with a big smile, wave it will be me.Being launched in Gill marina on Friday afternoon and will be lurking around Chatham doing various fettling jobs over bank holiday weekend.

And this is summer is it?

What boat did you buy in the end and what did you do with the old one. I was looking for a Princess 25. But cant find one in the right in the right condition for thr right price. Call me fussy, I don't know!

Wha'dya mean "I'm always playing with this engine" its the only way to get it to run!

Re: misery! You mean a free test of stamina !

Bit of a tale really.Went to look a Pegasus 35 earlier in month and made offer on boat, but no call back so gave up after week or so.Sitting at home having boaty sulk when gets phone call from man with Princess 33 who will take my P 25 with a wodge of cash so deal done. While taking old boat be lifted out get phone call from owner of Pegasus who is now prepared to accept my offer.
Quality of P25 varies wildly took nearly year to find mine had to go all over UK got it from Sheffield in end.Only my opinion but small engine ie.140 no good unless ditch crawling.Loads for sale on search engine of www.boats- for - sale .co.uk.Mine which had 175 hp would do about 13/14 knots with a decent load on board.Nice solid stable boat which was approved by wife and loads better than wizzy rocket things I had always had before.

And this is summer is it?

Re: misery! You mean a free test of stamina !

Thats what I thought. P25 required now as 2 short people getting bit bigger. It seems to have a big boat feel in quiet a compact package. Its either that or one of the yank offerings. I'd rather go the princess route with regards resale value. Do you know if there were many with twin engine installations, more for the security/safety aspect than performance.

Lock at Yalding may be worst but the pub's one of the best. IMHO. So at least there's a decent place to sit and put off going thro the lock.

Re:Princess 25

Name of new boat Marie Claire 11 at moment but will change to Sarah T as soon as my daughter coughs up the wedge for the sticky letters(fat chance).
Very few P.25 twin jobbys. One at Allington Marina(twin 130hp?) at moment been there a while on hardstanding, broker asking asking around 12/13k.When buying my P25 the owner was asking 13k.Offered 9k and got it.
Nice one at one the thames marinas single engine but clean inside.

And this is summer is it?

Err if you mean the Anchor, well depends on how well your tattoos match your shell suit and how far you can throw your empties?.IMHO
Far better is the pub in old village which has food you can actually eat.

And this is summer is it?

LOL!!! Meant the one along the road by the weir. The Tickled Trout at Teston lock used to be good, haven't been there for a few years tho.
