Medway to Scheveningen

Just did the trip in the other direction: http://allatseawithstargazer.blogspot.com/search?q=fair+wind . We were inbound from the Frisian islands, visited Scheveningen (to soak up a bit of Den Haag culture) and hopped across to the Orwell. Then back home to the Medway, via Pyefleet.

Navin's Cruising Guide to the Netherlands handy. North Sea Passage Guide now outdated by windfarm developments and changes to the various TSS's. Crossing on route described in blog link seemed to work well, in terms of keeping clear of the marine gyratory systems and crossing the lanes at close to right angles.

Hi Stu,

I've done Scheveningen once (1975, I think) and not bothered again. It seems to me better to head for the Roompot or Ijmuiden as either of these offer easy access to the canal system, whereas Scheveningen doesn't. The pickled herrings at Scheveningen were good back then, but I can't recommend much else about the place. We left after one night there for Haringvlietsluis - not the easiest of approaches and we found a British yacht had got aground and blown further up the shore.

Scheveningen is always a bit of a jamboree in the season and the rafting area gets completely packed, in a civilised, Dutch, sort of way. All craft are required to moor facing the entrance, apparently in case of fire. Unfortunately, they have moved the facilities to the opposite side of the harbour and it is now a massive walk to get anywhere, though I think that bike loan is free.

The place lacks the charm of the old buildings and club but connection to The Hague by tram is easy. The Hague must be the dullest city in Europe, but it does have one incomparable treasure in the Mauritshuis, a gallery with over half a dozen Rembrandts and three Vermeers, including the Girl with the Pearl Earring and the wonderful View of Delft.

As you say, much rafting. But a very friendly harbour. The Haven Meester brought me over a cake after the 4th move of the day! (Stargazer is 31 feet, so we had to shift to the outside each time a new 40 footer arrived)

If you like a bit of Gothic architecture the UN Peace Palace and Binnenhof make quite a spectacle

There are some fingers and it is always worth asking for one if you intend to stay for a few days.

Thanks for all contributions.
Just bought up to date charts and new plotter card.
I'm fairly happy with my route options now. I'll either head north to Harwich or east to Ramsgate for the first leg.

From Ramsgate I would go on to Dunkerque or Blankenberge.
From Harwich I'd go straight to scheveningen.

I assume I cannot pre book a space in scheveningen marina?

Well, you could try. It would be a chance to practice your Dutch.

Thanks for letting me know.
How likely is it that it could be full with summer hols in full swing?

I arrived on 3 July and the visitors area was packed. I called on VHF 31 from memory (or phone if not got #) and was allocated a vacant finger pontoon for the night. There are occasions when the marina is closed when the club is hosting sailing events and these dates are on the YC website.

They all speak English.

I don't mind busy but if they get properly full I'm not sure what alternatives there are apart from sailing up to Ijmuiden. Could be +5h or more if tide against. I guess the thing to do is give em a call early on to confirm space.

When we've gone to Holland we usually go from SYH to Breskens, easy marina to enter, even in the dark and then the next day into the canal system. Should be going next week if all goes to plan.
