Meeting last night with the local EA representatives , including long term lockie David Payne and newly recruited Jason Adams.
Interesting natter on the history of Medeway navigation since 4AD, right up to the present day and plans for the immediate future including details on funding.
Interesting information about where the money comes from and the amounts allocated to finance the Medway navigation.
There were comparisions made regards volunteers on the Thames and Medway. Thames have around 200 ? we have 3.
Updates on new shower/pumpout facilities at Yalding and Tonbridge and the provision of fish passes and kayak passage on the river.
Also mention of the background work done out of the public eye including brush and tree clearance, dredging, licence enforcement , jet washing mud off of landing stages.
Rubbish clearance mentioned, suspect none of it from boaters or any local fishing clubs.

After many years of neglect, most of the Medway infrastructure has now been bought up to a reasonable condition.
Several locks have been completely rebuilt at considerable expense. All this money had to be bid for and justified from a common DEFRA/EA pot.
Out local team obviously pulled above the weight to ensure we got the funding against competition who appear to believe they are some sort of special case. Obviously am referring to East Anglia and no one else. :)
However, a survey will be carried out in the near future on all the locks and weirs to ensure that no little suprises await in the future.

Couple of whinges at question time.
The subject of rubbish in the TIDAL river just below the lock and Peel Ports present total disinterest in the matter.
The great lump of best Kentish iron stone to be found in the river just above Tovil reducing the depth, apparently the sub strata under the river is rising up.
A certain poverty stricken member at the meeting did comment on the fact that it would be nice if a "two day" licence could be arranged for those wanting to stay for two nights, as over a weekend, rather than having to fork out for a 7 day licence.

All in all an optimistic outlook for the upper Mudway and cheers to all staff for past efforts.

Ps. Do believe they are looking to recruit another team member ?
Would love to apply but age, if not beauty prevails and feel sure the ability to drink tea and generally get in the way is not something they are looking for. :)

Great to see some activity from a nearby waterway on this forum.
The Thames (apart from the water flow) is pretty inactive - forunm wise at the moment, thus any input to break the silence is very welcome!-

Looking forward as always to coming round this year, now without time restraints and a chance to go right up as far as we can go.
Working on a cunning plan to go past Windsor marina at dead of night !

interesting film here on thr Mudway in flood. We can usually get my boat under those bridge arches.

Out of interest what's the maximum sensible draught on the non tidal Mudway?

I've recently bought a boat with draught of approx 3ft6 inches. It's basically a small (32ft) twin screw trawler. Shafts. Deepest points are the skegs under the props.

Currently on the Thames but I would like to have a trip down to the Mudway at some stage so quite interested to know about any depth problems.

I'm not bothered about mooring alongside always happy to stick bow in under a bush and go by dinghy.

Just general nav info really.

At 3ft 6inches and with a skeg /keel the only thing that will prevent your exploring the entire non tidal Medway will be air draft.
The likely barrier preventing you navigating up into Tonbridge town centre will be the very last bridge about .5 of a kilometer before the town proper.
The are some good quality moorings and a selection of mooring piles provided by EA .FOC. .........for the less agile a gang plank can be useful.
You are highly unlikely to be asked for money for any mooring unless stopping in one of the commercial boatyards or at Allington Lock. As denizen of the Thames you do get free entry to the Medway.
You do need to be bit self contained regards food / water / fuel as the river tends to only touch civilisation every now and then.
This is not the Thames with manicured lawns/resturants/ shops selling scented candles, magic crystals and a health spa at every stop. :)
Can give chapter and verse on timings during the tidal bits and can certainly help with an overnight mooring if needed , suspect that speed will not be a priority during your cruise.
There are some bridge profiles and airdrafts on the web.

Thanks for that. If I do get it together to come down that way I will take you up on your kind offer of more help with timing etc.

I'd be going from Bow locks on Lee Navigation as that is the best route for a slow boat I believe . Boat now has a gold license so I can use EA and CRT waterways. L

It's an off grid boat completely self sufficient for a long time.

Air draft is not a problem it's about 6ft2.

This is worth a look.
River Medway: bridges, locks and facilities for boaters
The lowest bridge is Cannon Bridge just before Town Lock in the centre of Tonbridge, about 8ft.

Well worth getting above the lock into the pound, its right next to the high street and can offer a quiet mooring with water .
Over looked by housing so pretty secure as well.
Pubs/shops and eating all nearbye.
Cannot ever remember paying but this might have changed.
One very fine free mooring spot on the way up, The Meadows at Golden Green..

Aylesford the tidal bit.

many years since venturing into Bow Creek and the Lee beyond..
Frequently go into West India and St Kats so have several passage plans on file. Most of them at around 8- 10knots 3- 4 of that being the tide .
Suggestion would be to exit Bow Creek before HW and use the ebb right down to Southend, across the Swatchway around the wreck to Sheerness and catch the flood up to Rochester.
5-6 hours at worst ?

2500/25.4 = 8' 2 1/2" so must of been very lucky to get under. Do remember taking the inflatable miles upstream from the town moorings, through a park and eventually coming to a high concrete wall, almost like a dam wall.

First tried to get up there in my friend's narrowboat (Ernest, a Tuesday Night Club expedition) a couple of years before (2001), at the height of the foot and mouth epidemic. We got about 4 locks from Tonbridge, and found the pound/river above close to empty. Nevertheless we went through the lock and promptly went hard aground, couldn't move anywhere. However we were determined, so broke the padlock on the weir to try and shut it, without success. The EA had to come out and rescue us, clearly they knew what had gone on, but were good hearted enough to fill the pound and let us cruise up to the next lock. With such failure, after getting to the head of Faversham Creek, we went off to the Blackwater only to be told, when we were still between the Crouch and thew Spitway buoys, we couldn't come through Heybridge Lock, again because of the foot & mouth. Did eventually get to Chelmsford though.
