Medway Boaters Fined - press release

H,mm ..My feeble and fading memory seems to recall a similar argument ,why I do not have to pay etc , not totally unlike that one, being put forward on an internet forum not totally unlike this one but a few short months ago.?
Wonder if the canal boat owner has a HSBC swiss bank account...purely for doing bit of shopping when abroad of course.

Yes the second episode in this series will be set in Penton Hook perhaps!

Lower Merdeway

Peel Ports will be wanting their £60 quid soon.....
....and not everyone in their juristriction is aware that there is a fee to pay.
Chatting to someone moored in Oare Creek recently,he had no idea what I was going on about when asked if he had an up to date sticker anywhere on his fishing boat ?

Ahoy there og - must say been a while since I sailed the Medway, but had about a good 35 years worth; so would you please explain the Peel Ports interest in the Medway for me, thank you ?

Don't boaters in the Medways pay harbour dues then?

Basically jumped up, self important ill informed knob and cronies spent a long time telling the police sergeant how to do his job, whilst trying to come across as an aggrieved victim who'd done nothing wrong.

He owed four years licence and about £8k in marina fees. Hence his boat was seized.

The policeman owed the money, or the jumped up, self-important, ill-informed control device (who I assume to be a cyclist)?

Leisure craft and commercial vessels which moor on the lower Medway are required to display a sticker , a bit like a tax disc, showing they have paid the £60 registration fee.Peel Ports hold info on type of boat, mooring location and owners details.

Came in very useful a few years ago when one of my previous boats was cast adrift.Peel ports sent up patrol boat to secure my Princess 33, contact me via the database to inform me of the location (well ashore by now) and to arrange recovery.
Never did find out who was responsible.:(

Up up and up. Without fail they increase the licence fee every year irrespective of the economic climate. I can understand why the EA need their income but I cannot see what we Mudway boaters get for our money.

Someone has to maintain bouyage, maintain the channels etc... Nothing comes for free. Same in most harbours, Poole, Salcombe, Chichester etc....

Peel ports are responsible for navigation aids in the river.Surveying, dredging providing both leisure and commercial moorings, plus clearing rubbish out of the river and disposal of wrecks.

Peel Ports need a kick up the a#*e where there licence is concerned. They need a fairer system where EVERY boat is billed for a licence and it is followed up to ensure EVERYONE pays it....that certainly doesn't happen at the moment.
Interesting you say it covers, amongst other things, dredging and rubbish collection Fred. My all tide floating berth dries out at every tide now and at low water you can almost walk across the river under the motorway bridge. And as far as rubbish goes we pull out literally tons of debris which we burn. I appreciate the buoyage etc needs upkeep, but we do tend to get totally forgotten up here!!

Did hear that PP had anounced that they had cleared some 2 tons of rubbish from the river. That only leavers about 10.000 tons still floating up and down.Believe the Medway Otter is supposed to have the task.
By far the worse has been the bit around New Hythe. It seems to clear a little if we get some decent winter floods, whereapon it all gets moved downriver a bit.

Do visitors to the medway have to pay anything to Peel ports, just for passing through their domain?

No £60.00 registration fee is purely for leisure boats moored on the tidal river. EA is responsible for collecting fees for boats moored or using the upper Medway.

A couple of years ago a Peel Ports boat I assume a harbour masters launch patrolled outside the lock gates at MDL waiting to check the licences of exiting craft. Was advised a £3000 fine could be issued but that could be a rumour. Incidentally licence discs from the last five years stretch across a saloon window;)
