And after all, there aren't many places where you can enjoy, together with a stunning and surrealistic anchorage right in the middle of nowhere, also a close encounter with a navy launch without actually being shot...

Or indeed being blown up by the unexploded bombs in the bay we're not supposed to be anchored in. I had to reassure the SWMBO that we couldn't possibly have been in any danger because the Italian military would never have hit what they were aiming at

Do tell, why on earth JTB is hanging the ancient Genoa Maritime Republic flag from his bedroom window...

The lower orders in English society, often referred to as Chavs in the media, are keen to show their patriotism to the country by an overt display of the national flag. One assumes this is a dig at JTB and referring to transit vans (his mode of business vehicle) is also a further reference to the lower classes.

It passes as friendly banter between friends but when done against those not known to you it is a slur.

Fwiw, that argument has been around for years, but I've yet to hear of any bomb on the bottom actually seen by anyone - let alone hit with the anchor, not to mention exploded!

Otoh, there's another (pretty sad, and very unpleasant) risk these days: not later than yesterday, a floating corpse was found on the W side of Teulada Cape, opposite to where you were anchored.
They think it's of a migrant coming from Algeria, because a couple of weeks ago a smallish boat was found, capsized, 15 NM or so off the Teulada coast... :ambivalence:

And anchored off Villasimius. The colour of the water reminded me of the Thames estuary

Thanks Cheery for your explanation, indeed I wasn't aware of that background, and my post was just meant as a joke about St George's flag actually being originally from Genoa - something that afaik many Brits aren't aware of.

I'm very sad to hear that. SWMBO and I were discussing only yesterday whether Sardinia had been receiving migrant boats given its proximity to N Africa. It reminds me how fortunate we are to live in Europe

And actually, in S Sard the situation is not bad at all (though that guy who only reached Teulada as a drown body wouldn't share the same view, obviously ), compared to Sicily Strait and its islands, which are struggling to cope with even the most basic needs of all the migrants who eventually survived the crossing....

You are not wrong. When we were cruising up the Ligurian coast a couple of years ago for the first time, I saw all the St George's flags and I thought how nice it was for the locals to welcome us so warmly

In actual fact, St George has been misappropriated by quite a number of different countries and regions. If we English weren't so relaxed and tolerant, we might get upset by it

"White van man" is a commonly used slang term for an overtly patriotic, daily mail reading, tradesman because they often drive white transit vans. Anyway it couldn't possibly be a dig at Jimmy because his van is orange and he has no discernible trade
