Mediterranean living costs

Chinita , i have not been in a marina for 3 years now. In the real world ( outside the med ) we tend to sail all year round and move with the weather systems. The med is a tiny part of the world , very nice place, very nice peoples but there really is alot more out there , lots more to see and experience.

Plenty of time for you to consider your stealth foray into the next unsuspecting marina. Tie up on the waiting pontoon, fill the tanks, wash her down liberally, nip ashore for a quick dump and shower in the facilities already paid for by the berth holders (Thatcherite *******s can afford it anyway), do a quick circuit of the skips, grab a cheap beer in a (free wifi) bar while the missus blags the code for the laundrette and scours around for some cotton to sew the arse back into your trousers. Hmm, 'book swap' - yeah, we'll have some of those, ta.

Just enough time to scuttle off to Lidl for a few dozen of those nice 0.90 cent wineboxes, cast off and disappear into the night as the mariniero appears from his little shed........

Yes, these marinas do have a purpose, don't they.

That is what I love about this forum, you get so many everyday practical tips, a big thank you:encouragement:

Lol....jordanbasset, I do believe your humour is as dry as mine!

It's not the first time I have been likened to old victor Meldrew either, which is something I take as a compliment.

Thanks, I shall bear that in mind.

To divert from the mutual blowing smoke up arse-fest and allowing me to have my split sides sown up again perhaps we should return to the OP's question.

I don't know the answer; the phrase 'take half as many clothes and twice as much money as you think you will need' springs to mind. However, as we are talking about boats the ratio should be one third clothes and three times money.

If you ever make it to Lagos I shall be happy to show you a good time - providing I am tucked up in bed by 8pm of course.

Cruiser007 you are not entering into the spirit of the moan-fest that this thread has become. I know you mean well, but reporting that you are having a nice time with great people and saving the expense of marinas is not what we want to hear. Providing solutions is just not welcome, we (collectively) are in a place where we are never happier than when we are miserable.

The last thing we need is some Goldilocks figure to come along and find the right sized porridge at the right temperature. Nope that will not do at all!

This couple in this you tube video (link below) sum up my views and the benefits of being a liveaboard very well. Probably not sufficiently concise for some, (especially with them being American :) ) but I thought they captured the life pretty well.

Just before people start attacking David view on Liveaboards and his skills , I have to say his a very nice guy and conversation we had face to face in the past and the way he handles his yacht solo he know his stuff , OK his views aren't the views of ( if you want to put a label to Liveaboard ) Though of us who live full time on our boats , I can tell you the four or five months in a marina with people who want to run our life does my head in and we are out sailing some of that time , but after saying that the people you meet and the friends we have made from all over the world goes some ways to make up for that .
I don't think David would be to upset if I say his summer Liveaboard ( how did you put it David, .( Swallow :) ) and what's wrong with that ? most full time Liveaboards have no where to return to , they sold there home or rented then to live there dream other wise I guess a few more would join David in returning back home for the winter months , in an ideal world I would like to sail all the year round and miss out the marina bit , but we can't , the weather in Europe and the Med won't let us , we also need some time to socialise and fix boats , services engine , repair sails and give our body's a rest for the element , I often suggested to my girlfriends co skipper we should buy an old cheap yacht some where in the cribs and go out there for the winter months , that way we have the best of both worlds or I will any way , co skipper is normally I too busy with other people sails and canvas jobs for any thing to bother her . In some where that's not a bad thing it give me time to stick my head into someone else engine compartment , and get away from the banging next door , We all have different view of what a Liveaboard life is about and we all live it in a away that suite us best , parts of our winter stay in a marina I enjoy , parts I hate ( people next to you who have no consideration for any one else , hamming , drilling , grinding , and and banging every day , day in and day out , it like living next doer to someone who running a repair shop , we all need to sort out our problem , but every day ? at less at anchor we can move away .

Apologies if this comes up frequently but I rarely read this forum and presumably information becomes outdated fairly quickly.

Any ideas how much it costs monthly to fund a modest liveaboard life in the Med ?
This does not include boat maintenance as that is how long is a piece of string type question.
The boat is 36' and summer would I think be mainly on the hook but some marina visits. Not sure about the winter, might stay or come back to UK.
So, just the out of pocket costs for living and occasional berthing. Quite happy with our own company so would not spend an excessive amount of time in bars !
This is very much an embryonic idea - coming up to the time of life when we have a chance to make radical changes and just wondering if it could be funded by renting out our house.
Mallorca, £100.00 a week just for food eating in house/Apartment
Don't stay for more than six months with you boat as you will pay import duty.
