I know the keel lifting post on my Medina isn't 'right'. As the keel is winched up it is pulled into the post and the higher it gets, the harder it gets to raise. I know it's putting stress on the aluminium post and the built in pulley wheels. Should the keel be lifting absolutely vertically?

no. the keel does not lift absolutely vertically because it is pulled against the lifting post, also the keel gets heavier and heavier as it comes out of the water. Every thing is quite norma. I find it easier to wind up if i sit behind the lifting post on the forepeak bunk and get square on to the winch handle l hope this helps

We had one as our first boat and IIRC there was no Graunching against posts wire went from one side down to keepl round a pully on the keel then up to another pulpl and down to winch. there was a frame on both sides of the keel IIRC

To clarify, are you saying the keel wasn't connected to the bitter end of the halyard? That the keel hung on a free-running pulley between the pulley at the top of the keel post and a point on the cabin ceiling?

Slightly more information (and I think I've worked out how to upload a pic now - the proof will be in the posting).
This is my Medina keel lifting post. The hook connects to the eye on the top of the keel and winding the winch simply drags the keel up. As it comes out the top of the keel box, the keel weighs across and touches the pillar, adding to the load. I attempted to wind the keel high enough to put in the keel restraining bar yesterday but the load was getting ridiculous.
I suspect there should be a strut at the top of the post that the hook clips onto after the rope has passed through a block/pulley fitted to the top of the keel. Can any Medina owners/former owners confirm or clarify this for me?

Lifting keel problems

My lifting keel also comes up vertically although it comes up between 2 posts one under the mast one further aft. The 4 purchase tackle coming from the middle out through the cabin top to a halyard winch. Not easy to lift the 100kg and takes a while.
It is very sensitive to fore and aft trim especially when dropping it. I wonder if this might be a problem for you.
However it would seems a better idea if the post and winch are at the front of the keel to take the cable through a block on the keel and take the end to a point on the ceiling aft of the keel so lifting it vertically from the middle not pulling forward.Or other way around if the post and winch are behind the keel. Also of course this would give an additionmal purchase for lifting. Sorry just a few thoughts without seeing the boat and keel. olewill

medina keel lifting

My medina has the same post as your boat and it works the way you describe. I do not think anything is missing, remember the keel weight is 213kg +/- 10kg
My lifting strop is dynema although I believe the origionals were galvanised wire.

I had a Medina for several years - great little boat but I cannot for the life of me remember the exact lifting keel arrangement other than to say there was no problem with the keel fouling the post and the keel lifted very easily.

Why not contact the Medina Class Association

http://www.medina20.com/

They may be able to help

I am in touch with the association and the secretary is hunting out project sheets for me. It (the association) doesn't seem that active though, hardy surprising when the last boat was made almost 30 years ago. The web site is effectively a holding page.

Firstly, Oldhunter, sorry if I appear to have ignored you. Your posts have only just appeared! Don't know what went wrong there. I had notification of your two posts on this thread and one for the Medina Mast Crutch thread at 15:00 and 15:10 today!

I'm glad to know mine isn't the only simplified winch/post. I've seen pics of other Medinas which appear to show a system of pulleys to reduce the effort (but increase the number of handle turns) required to winch.

Are you able to wind your keel high enough to slide the keel supporting bolt through the post and into the keel - therefore taking the load off the winch/strop?

Hi Highndry, my posts had to be approved that is why they took so long to appear. I can get the bolt in the hole in the keel, the lifting strop is in line with the hole but I can push past it into the hole in the keel
I notice in the pic you have two holes in the post. I am sure there is only one in mine,I will check when down at the boat. you say that the screw holding the sheave is loose and pulling through, mine are held in with machine screws, I would put a penny washer behind to act as a backing plate. you will have fun doing that as you will need a ring spanner taped to a piece of wood to reach inside the post as I had to replace the sheaves on mine.
I hope you enjoy your medina they are great fun

Been through the 'holding a washer and a nut on the end of my finger with grease' routine. Great parlour game!

The 'original' machine nuts in mine screw into lead plugs? One of the lead plugs was pulling through.
