Doxycline is an antibiotic which should not be used in children and I would certainly not wish to use long term if there was an alternative. Like all antibiotics it screws up your gut flora and has a range of possible side effects.
It is only prophylactic and will not cure but used to be recommend in areas with chloroquine resistance.
But I suppose there are additional benefits from blanket cover with a broad spectrum antibiotic; especially if you plan to visit the local nightclubs !
Personally I would carry a curative dose of artemesin.
