We have been cruising in the Med for the past 5 years and the good old E111 has served us well in the couple of times we needed medical assistance.
However we are now in Turkey and the the medical experiences of two couples we met recently left them much worse off financialy.
Our initial search shows international medical insurance as being very expensive - has anyone any knowledge or information of affordable medical/travel insurance suitable for cruisers?

We had PPP cover in the UK that we simply transferred to 'international' at not much greater cost if you don't visit the USA. If you ever had PPP/BUPA/Norwich or whatever it might be worth going back to them to see what they say.

They shouldn't really premium it at all except for repatriation costs. You won't believe the medical facilities in (say) Trinidad and Venezuela and at half the price of UK treatment.

I've been quoted about £1200 p.a. excluding the USA and GP type stuff... is that roughly what you were paying PPP for UK only?

Hi, We're looking into this too at the moment.
Have you tried Insure and Go - they do a backpackers insurance policy that they offered to me when i said i'd be sailing for a year, for worldwide cover including USA and canada they quoted 450 pound, and can cover you for 4 trips of 14 days back to the UK for an extra charge. Also quoted 170 pounds for a 28 day Pacific crossing, but i'm not sure what this covers exactly.

Welcome to the forums... I'll have a look at Insure and Go. I'm currently travelling on an annual www.snowcard.co.uk policy. It only covers 31 day trips, which suits me in the short term, and trip length can be extended for a premium, (dont know how much though). I pay £123 for the year.

Take some time to fill in your profile, so we can tell what you sail, and where.

Try Pantaenius for a year round family policy excluding the USA.
£135 for up to 60day trips.
No doubt they will offer longer periods for a premium.
Includes up to 21days winter sports surprisingly.

Some months ago Pantaenius was proposing a medical insurance policy for 500 euros per person per year.

I believe they have somewhat changed that into a Crew medical insurance for which I plan to ask them for a quote.

We too have been checking this out as we pay (late 50's) about £1,700 pa for top range UK medical cover via good old Saga but also wish to extend cover for overseas cruising.

I was not aware of Pantaenius offer so will check that out also - thanks for the tip.

One issue we've realised for oldies is annual increases are almost at the insurers discretion. Our premium leapt last year so it scared us for the future.

No connection other than as a UK new customer - but we found Exeter Friendly do UK cover around same prices we paid before - but the bonus was they fix annual increases to a known percentage.

Sorry for the delay had to find the paperwork. We pay £1,440 per person p.a. for international ex. USA. It doesn't help that we smoke, also premiums are very age related. To state the obvious, it's worth comparing the small print in different policies, there are huge variations in exclusion clauses (just like yacht insurance) - if it seems 'cheap' there is probably a good reason.
