MEDICAL: How to test for a possible stroke.

I have sent this on to many friends in the UK and Oz hoping it might help some poor sole. I have had to change the emergency number though. FYI Australia's emergency number is 000.

Make sure you have it handy if visiting this part of the planet.

Andavagoodweekend.

I recently read somewhat similar advice if you or someone else appeared to be having a heart attack. The advice was to cough, as long and violently as you can. The point I think was that the stimulus to the system could jolt the heart into ticking again properly. I've no idea whether this is true - anyone know?

The point was that your phone will look for other networks if yours doesn't have a signal. I still don't know if it's true! Be handy if it was and certainly worth a go - if I was out of range of Orange and facing an emergency I'd try anything.

[/ QUOTE ]The technology is capable but the network operators haven't implemented, in full anyway, so please do not rely on this.

Many field based operational staff have to carry two phones because of this issue, eg electrical engineers repairing HV cables out in the sticks.

The point is that your phone won't look for anything if it hasn't got a signal - it means you are out of range of any transmitter and your phone is as much use as a brick!

If it can pick up another network, then it has a signal - that is how "roaming" works abroad.

Yep, totally difference responses from yogaphone and wirgin, where I live.

[/ QUOTE ]That's cos Virgin uses the T-Mobile network, formerly known as 1-to-1 and cruelly nicknamed "1-to-No-one" because of its poor coverage!

This is dangerous nonsense. 911 does not work in the UK as stated by others in the forum. If you don't believe it, ring it on your own phone.
There are periodic e-mails circulating with duff advice on what to do if you have a heart attack, what to do if you are in a rape situation, etc, etc.
I cannot conceive why people would get a kick out of creating viral e-mails which could result in serious harm or death of a complete stranger, but I am surprised to see one PBO's forum.

Re Heart attack - I believe an aspirin administered aqap is of benefit. The tiny 'dispersible' 75 mg ones are good as they are absorbed thru' the mouth lining and do not need to be swallowed. This is a non-medic speaking !!

Re: MEDICAL: How to test for a possible stroke.

I am amazed at the number of times on these forums that someone makes a post which might well be usefull to other folk and then gets major flack for doing so.

Given this forum is read by residents around the world it made sense to me to include the telephone numbers shown. Any intelligent person would know which number to ring in their own country to contact the emergency services.

It is no wonder that a number of folk who made valuable contributions in the past have left.

My late mother always reckoned that if you could not say something that was information, interesting or funny, then silence was the preferred option.

they tell me 999, 112, and 911 will all work in the UK.

[/ QUOTE ]

112 will work as the emergency number anywhere in the EU. According to the Met Police website it will overide keypad locks!

In any medical emergency, 'Time is of the essence' and to be carted off (for free) in the UK for 'tests' is far better than ending up paralyzed ..... much better to be safe than sorry

[/ QUOTE ]Same is true here in Spain - 112 - and they are as fast as the UK lot. Thanks for the OP - nice and easy to remember.

Re: I checked with the National Police advice line.

Nick,

If I am wrong, on this crucial issue, then most profound apologies.

I did not make this statement lightly, however.

The person answering my telephoned query to the National Police Advice Line (an 0845 number), plus her Supervisor, were both unhesitatingly certain that 911 WILL work in the UK.

Additionally, here's a passage from Wiki:

"999 is the United Kingdom's and Ireland's emergency telephone number and Poland's medical emergency number. They are all used alongside the EU standard 112.[1] Either number can be used but 999 is much more commonly used than the lesser-known 112. In the UK, the United States emergency telephone number of 9-1-1 works as well".

As I say, if that's all duff information, profound apologies.

MEDICAL: How to test for a possible stroke.

Did they say if that applied for only BT lines, all landlines, or all land and mobile lines? At home, most people will have a landline, or a neighbour. The problem is when on out and about, on the boat.
