What's in mine? A bottle of rather good malt and some aspirin! No, not really, as I don't drink at sea, even medicinally (I know, I know, it's boring, but it works for me). Normal quota of dressings, bandages, plasters, steristrips, potions, lotions, creams and antiseptic, eye wash, dental repair kit (probably not brave enough to use that without the good malt!) plus a range of off-the-shelf painkillers, motion stoppers etc. I also carry strong prescription painkillers and broad spectrum antibiotics, but only because my doctor made me promise to call him before ingesting - just to make sure I wasn't going to cause any further problems. As I get seasick if I've been ashore for more than a month I take Stugeron for a week before leaving, which seems to work, so there's always some of that aboard somewhere. My own experience of blue water sailing would seem to prove that it's actually incredibly healthy, but I do worry about falling and breaking something, hence the painkillers.
Bonjour
In France special medical training has been organised, at first for offshore single handed racers. These training are now available for any remote area cruising person and I more than suggest to follow such a training. You learn how to be "the eyes and the hands" of the doctor with a specific methodology.
In addition we have, in Toulouse hospital, a distant medical centre that works H24.
In case of problem I would have called the CROSS (coastguard) that would have forward my satellite phone call to the medical centre...
There is a good book from Dc Chauve (he was in charge of the medical issues of the Figaro race for years...)
Guide de la medecine a distance (Tome 1 and 2) by Jean-Yves Chauve (available on Amazone) but it's in French !!!
For the Figaro or the Vendée Globe, Dc Chauve has developed a medical suitcase that is in the mandatory equipment list. The content of the suitcase must be detailed in the book.
