Looking at bething possibilities in the med and I require a marina with hotel or resprt facilities - namely a pool, decent restaurant and bar (or more than one), club house/room would also be good.

MDL St Carles in spain is an obviuos one, and I am also aware of Marina Frapa in Croatia. Only other criteria is that its reletively easy to get to from the UK

Jez,

Gibraltar...lots of Hotels and a new Floating hotel, join the yachtclub who have pool, restaurant and new paddle tennis court midway between both marinas....or Sotogrande with the NH hotel in Port, Benalmadena or any NMarina on CDS

Cala d'or in Majorca plus club de mar and RCN in Palma fit the bill. I'd give RCN a miss though due to shabbiness. There is nothing in France that fits the bill except Marina Baie Des Anges 10 mins Nice airport. Camper Nicholson in Malta fits bill except no pool yet

It's all compromises. St Carles is keenly priced with great clubhouse but you can burn money on airport transfers plus fuel getting to nice cruising spots

Is the Marina Baie Des Anges usual south of France berthing costs? Any guess as to what a 15m berth would be - don't mind med berthing. Did look on the website but its pretty poor and what is there is in French

Actually Camper and Nicholsons in Malta is the worst example....

We have Portomaso here with Hilton just on top, and also the Excelsior hotel problem is none have berths including the above.
(Grand Harbour Marina have berths only for 60 feet plus (few) and for like fifty Super Yachts {never seen more then twenty there} thanks to a stupid marina layout).

Many marinas in Italy like the Ostia Rome harbour have a hotel exactly by the marina think it is four star.
Problem here is that you have to go twenty miles for nice cruising grounds, but you do have Sardegna and Corsica only at about 100 nm.

La Rague (Cote d'Azur) also has those facilities, with exception of club house, although unsure if the hotel is open all year around.

La Rague, altho v pretty, is right at the limit of practical commuting from Nice airport though, it's well north of 100 euros in a cab, not easy by train, 25 miles/35 mins by road. I guess it all depends on your plan though, if you're coming down 3x a year for longer stays, it might work - but for frequent weekends it doesn't, from experience.

Cheers
Jimmy

Main plan is for Andrea and the kids to base themselves on the boat during the summer break (July/August) hence the requirement for a pool/club/leisure facilities. I'd be semi commuting back to Stansted during that time so an airport with decent Ryanair/easyjet connections us a major draw. Would also like the option idling weekend use as well throughout the year.

They are all in the same next of the woods, I think St Laurent du Var (next to the airport) is the cheapest, and certainly the most available.

I've got the BdA tariff on the boat I think, I'll be back down at the weekend so if you still need it I'll dig it out then. Personally I'm not hugely keen on BdA, I did look at it last year, but it's a bit soulless, and the hinterland isn't great. Fairly close to the airport though. I think I've also got SLDV if you want that one as well. I'd expect a 15m rental to be of the order of 12k euros pa in round numbers; the main problem I had last year was security of tenure - but that's a fairly well-known problem, with various solutions.

Why don't you come down for a day to have a look around? It's an easy day-trip from Gatwick, for example.

I don't think Ryanair don't come to Nice at all (thankfully...) but EJ definitely run the STN-NCE route.

If you're considering all year use, La Rague gets v quiet in winter; one of the (many) attractions of Antibes is the fact that it's a year-round town which makes winter trips viable.

True PVb is an all round town but the port doesn't have the facilities that Whitelighter is asking for.

Re SLDV, that is right under the glide path into NCE and is about 800 metres from the piano keys, now unless you are a very keen and deaf plane spotter then probably not the place to relax on the sun pad.

Is 35 minutes really a big commute.

A proper little resort with a several pools and a tennis courts etc and a nice set of moorings is La Galere just at the end of Theoule, right on the waterside overlooking the Lerins. It is a 40 minute commute from NCE though.

All fair points. I think the only way that La Rague would work though is if you kept a car with the boat, or rented one every time you came down - either way you're driving (see what I did there? :)) the costs up, and the convenience down.

LOL.

OK so what might be 35 minutes in the other direction from NCE that might suit Whitlighter? You could probably just about do Beaulieu or Menton. Anything there that meets his criteria? I don't know the area well enough. I haven't been to the new Genoa marina but that might also tick the box.

What about St Jean marina off Cap Ferat, I believe there is a hotel and pool which you can use if berthed there. We havnt used it yet as never managed to get a berth for long enough.

Port Vauban has the small beach on the marina which is ok (AKA the toilet beach, due to its shape).

We were in La Rague earlier in the month and it took someone 45 mins to drive from Cannes to La Rague to meet us!!! that would be well over an hour from teh airport in the summer.

Even further away is Port Grimaud, there must be a swimming pool around there somewhere? Even further away I know.

Good thing about the marinas near Nice airport is the amount of daily flights and the speed of getting to and from the berth from the airport.

Biased but Port Vauban works for my family

Wakeup, I like all of Theoule incl the beach, the restaurants and La Galere, but for Whitelighter's proposed size of boat (50 ft) there is no berthing there. Absolute max in Theoule port is 40 ft, for which there are only a few slots (and maybe 100yr wait list and maybe locals only?). Jez would have to berth the boat in LaRague or LaNap, and then needs a car to get to Galere...

Jez, for entertainment for the family in summer while you are commuting for weekdays back to UK, I still think Antibes makes the most sense. It has the nicest town behind = entertianment for family, plus trains station 200m from port taking you along coast anywhere twixt Cannes and Monaco, and loads of sensibly priced restuarants. It doesn't have a pool but the solution to that is easy - (a) blag rides on other forum boats :), and (b) hire a captian to take the boat out for the day and anchor at Lerins, and that's the swimming pool (I'm assuming Andrea wouldn't want to run the boat herself, which is understandable with kids!). You also have the big water park, dolphin/orca show and funfair at Biot (google Marineland Antibes), one train stop away or a €15 taxi, where it is very easy to spend a day time and time again

Remember when you are right in the centre of CDA your fuel cost can drop dramatically. You can do a whole summer on one tank if you want becuase there are so many good anchorages within 10miles to east and west. Taxi from NCE to Antibes is €70; the stopper bus is €1, and the fast bus about €10. Train is something like €8 but the station is 500m (ish - check google maps; it's Nice st Augustin station not the main Nice station) from airport so you'd need just a wheelie bag each. Plenty of forum cars to borrow

Jez I'm there from tonight till next Weds. I have a boat full of visitors but will have plenty of chance for a beer/chat with you and Jimmy. You can borrow my Clio (insured any driver; has TomTom) if you want to tour around to look at marinas nearby. I'm not using the car all weekend except for 8-9am shopping runs becuase I have a busy cruisng itinerary)

I think Nick H, A+K are around this weekend too, back from Corsica, and EME is around for sure as he is crusing his Targa50 with me
