Yeah I know its a bit hot in the UK at the moment but its pretty damned hot out here too and my icemaker has packed up today which is nothing short of a catastrophe. It is an Isotherm clear ice 220V unit. It has been working fine this week but we noticed that there was more water than normal coming out of the drainhole. We spent last night at anchor so the unit was off and when we switched on the gennie this morning, the icemaker started up as normal but made no ice. We have put more water in it but all it seems to do is recycle warm water

Anyone got any ideas?

Oh dear. Find that dodgy Italian broker of Whitelighter's and sell the boat to the next unsuspecting Brit. It's the done thing.

Yep, this happened to me last week. Solution is, first, have TWO icemakers on the boat, so we had no drama. To replace the busted one, local supplier price was €2.5k so I got one in UK@ half that and checked it in as hold baggage last Friday and it took 20 minutes to fit. You could go one better than me, as I had to carry mine - you could get Petem to bring you one out when he comes to Sardinia :D

with your permission, I shall use that to illustrate what is meant by Design Resilience at my next lecture on risk management :)

immediate ice is obv found from gentle grovelling at the local bar/resto. Some icemakers seem to get stuck in icy mode, and i fixed a few with a cup of boiling water in the ice tray to "un-stick" the thing.

Decamp to Jenny Wren and worry about it while costuming Mike's ice

OK
I'm in the marina and the other boats are out.

If you have some room in your freezer, I can make extra if you like for when you get back here.
Our ice maker is usually off - doesn't run from batteries so we always fill our freezer.
I'm sure we can do the same for you and take the pressure of getting yours fixed.

I know this doesn't sound like a vital thing but I'd hate to be without ice.

Yup! You have 2 of pretty much everything that matters on a boat, if you think about it (fuel source being the obvious and worrying exception)

When the isotherm ones stop making ice but make all the right noises it is normally one of two things.

1) filter in water reservoir blocked with calcium. Check if the water jets are reaching the mould.

2 the water inlet valve leaking. It lets water in constantly so it never gets cold enough to produce ice. Switch the unit off, lift up the dangling plastic bitsand look for a trickle of water running in from above. If this is the problem then the valve can usually be back flushed with a hose pipe. You can test this theory by switching off the water supply and seeing if it will make one batch of ice.

Aquatom gets my vote. He fitted a rudder indicator by going swimming as opposed to the boat being lifted. Actually he sort of hibernated under the bathing platform which was pretty impressive!

You're probably right jfm. I have to get a bigger boat to be able to fit 2 of everything. Noah had the same idea and I bet he didn't run out of ice. 2 of everything doesn't include SWMBOs though. One of those is more than enough;)
