Seems a lot of dough for a 30yr old aircraft?
Never having bought a plane, how does this process go? Similar to a boat ie deposit, survey, test flight, cough up or is it different
Don't forget to factor in huge running costs - not just fuel, but strict maintenance regime. Landing fees too. But the real disadvantage with this idea is that SoF boaters would STILL have to pay the full €50 for the Nice-Antibes taxi.
I'm not serious: magnum is right that every single plane old or new is subject to strict maintenance regime, a plane that old wd have to be chartered (hence needs two pilots) but isn't quite new and smart enough to do so.
The gobbledygook indicates how many hours on each engine, and since overhaul (SOH) and on the entire airframe (total time = TT hours so that airfram has done avge say 300mphish x 7000hours = about 2milion miles but repainted, refitted and so on. Not sure you're even allowed to put a screwdriver near the thing really. So all in all, apart from the fact that the carpet might (or probly mightnot) be a bit tatty, it'll still bomb along at 400knots.
Also of course, loads of commercial planes are fairly old too. Also, on top of all that, the rules stupilate type approval (think it's called that) so the pilot has specific training on the plane, etc etc etc.
i did once buy a plane. Well, swmbo did, cos she had the licence. Whilse she learnt, I took the kids swimming as i was always iffy about doing any gardening or even being at home while she learnt cos it would look abit bad on the new if she crashed into me - the swimming pool in bromley tho was six floorts underground....
Anyway, then we bought a plane, from the training fleet, which made sense so they looked after it and it made a few quid, or didn't LOSE anything, so it was sort of free day triops all along the frecnh coast dieppe, le touquet and so on, made even better as she weasn't allowed to drink anything and er i was.
Oh yes, the actual purchase process was sposed to be tests and so on, but i sed look, since she's just passed, if the instructor says it's ok, and the school will fly the thing, we aren't such great judges of it so may as well just buy it - so we did.
Memorably, Swmbo tried to buy it with a credit card "cos i'll get air miles"! Loads less than any million dollars tho, a oldish little buzzy 4-seat un pressurised single engine plane that does 140mph ish costs about £25k or it did 12years ago, probly about the same now, but it's regulation city, and unsociable cos can't hang around a bar, PLUS the nightmarishness of finding the dang airport from the air (just pre-gps) and the aargh landing and and ...makes boating a total doddle in comparison.
Purchase price is the least of anyones worries with one of those. The servicing and running costs are enormous, you could run a 30m twin 3000hp yacht cheaper including crew. Can't even replace a sink plug in the toilet without a JAR certificate and even though its the same one from B&Q comes with a certificate so costs £50.
Cost, south coast to south of France and back - about 12 grand.
Mind you ten years from now will still be worth about a million dollars so depreciation is'nt an issue.
