Mechanical Sumlog Bowden Cable.

My 40 year old mechanical 'Sumlog' stopped working following a fracture in the Bowden cable probably due to salt water corrosion.

I have done a temporary repair job by cutting the outer sleeve and re-joining the broken ends of the inner cable with a crimp connector.

However, I am planning to have the boat (Trintella 1A) hauled out soon and would like to replace both the inner and outer cables.

Any clues as to where I might get these now discontinued parts.

Be prepared for an eye-watering price. I've just check my bookmark for Furnall-Riddeaux & I see that the Sumlog spares page has been deleted.

This company will make one to spec cheaper than a new one, but it's still not cheap.

I like the idea of crimping, what did you use for the crimp & crimping tools. I fancy fixing mine, I've been ignoring the problem for 2 years.

Sumlog Bowden Cable.

Thanks for the info. Have placed order with Furneaux Riddall who can still supply at £80.00 inc VAT! They have just two inner/outer cables left.

For those interested, my bodge which has lasted 18months was done as follows:-

Located break in inner cable, (mine was thankfully above the water line) cut outer cable about two inches either side of break and removed this four inch section.
Slid a six inch length of plastic tubing with an inner diameter that would just slide over the outer cable, then joined the broken ends of the inner cable with an inline (yellow) cable joiner and crimped both ends with crimping tool.
Located plastic tubing equally either side of join.

Make sure that the cable runs straight at the point of repair,as join cannot flex. Also trickled some machine oil down the old outer while I could.

80 SQUID!! OMG. I think it was about 46 I was quoted for just an inner. I think I can get one specially made for about half that.

Mine broke at the water line - obviously corrosion making it brittle over a period of 30 years or so. I have removed mine (both bits of inner) quite easily so the outer is not affected. 18 months is good enough for a cheap bodge.

Adding a layer of oil sounds a good idea, except that my boat dries out twice a day so the oils would soon go, but a good blob of waterproof grease may help.
