Measuring boat length

Bit of debate going on at marina about the length of my boat. Falcon 22 which means 22 feet long as shown is boat specs. Not Falcon 23 which is newer model.
22ft equals 6.77 m
Marina says it is over 7m at 7.15m as thay have measured it.
What is the reconised method of measuring a boat?

Any advice?
 
A tape measure!

Some marinas will measure it from end to end. My Bayliner 2455 was once measured by a marina and I got a phone call saying I owed them more money becasue it wasn't 25ft as I stated, it was 28ft overall. :eek: Because I left the outdrive tilted up, they had even included the extra length of the prop and skeg sticking out behind the bathing platform.

Your 22ft probably doesn't include bathing platform and pulpit overhang.

Marinas have never followed the normal way of measuring ships and so include
anything protruding forard and aft. Just watch out for the bowsprit and ensign staff aft. Could cost you a fortune.
 
Your Falcon 22 (nice boat) is the same as the 23, which was a slightly updated version, on the same hull.

The designation in the title (22) does not usually literally mean the length. I think the Sealine SC35 is nearer 38ft when the old tape measure comes into play, and this is quite normal. We used to own a Sunbird 225, which was actually 25 ft long. Sometimes the designation means beam rather than length, as several US boat owners will verify.

Our marina is happy to accept the designation of the boat, without resorting to the tape. Some are not so customer friendly. Sounds like yours is the latter.

Surly there is a better way than a tape measure!!!!

When there can be a big difference in the cost of the berth, there has to be a more accurate way??
 
Surely the most accurate way of measuring anything is with the appropriate measuring device, and that for a boat would be a tape measure.
I think the Falcon 22 has an LOA (length overall all) of 23'7". Which would be about what your yard has stated.

Never mind what the books say, take your own trusty tape measure and measure the length of your boat yourself. Take 2 canes and put them down at right angles to the pontoon, in line with the extremities of the bow and stern. Then measure between them. They're either right, or they're wrong, simple as that.
 
What's annoying with marina charges, is they charge for every inch showing. Then put you on a finger berth much shorter. Mine is charged for a 10 metre berth and they put me on a 8 metre finger saying it's a 10 metre berthing space.

The length of your boat very much depends on who is asking.

Ours is 25ft O/A so to friends and family it is 25ft. As it is an S23 it is 23ft long when marinas start asking and wanting berthing fees :D
 
We have a Aquabell 33 that measures 35.5 feet, (according to them) and the berth we are on could accomodate a 40 footer, along the pontoon there are 20 footers accupying 40 foot berths, next time we are out the water I am going to drop a plumb and then measure, not that it will do any good.

Tell em to stuff it and go somewhere else unless you particularly prefer that Marina.
Seems the majority of marinas have space now
 
We find that unbolting our anchor and storing it on the fore deck saves us well over £1K per annum as the few extra inches it adds take us up into the next category and they don't miss an inch when they are measuring:(

As times are so hard at the moment - I will have to calculate what sawing off the bathing platform can save us:rolleyes:

I really like the marina im in, but will have to look elsewhere if i dont think they are being fair

maybh1 Yes Im thinking about taking the bathing platform off as dont use it much in the Clyde!!!
