me pin\'s going green

Autohelm 2000, plug has one pin going green, the nmea one.

socket is fine.

now the contact is dud & it doesn't work reliably any more, 12 months old.

i've cleaned it up, covered in teflon grease, still same problem /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

suggestions please /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: me pin\'s going green

It's unlikely that the socket is not corroded if the pin was. However, if the contacts really are both clean then logic says it's another problem. You'll need to check the NMEA circuit end to end and find out what has failed. We don't have that autopilot but there must be people around here who do and know what fails.

As a general rule looking at the spares packs in chandleries tells you what will go wrong but for specific kit, like autopilots, ask the manufacturer what they recommend you buy as spares for long distance cruising.

Teflon isn't a good cleaner and conductor, try the old fall backs of WD 40 or contact cleaner.
Check for an Earth fault up your NMEA (usually GPS talky thingy)as all should go manky at once or not at all.
As if and when life returns to your Green Pin ensure moisture is kept out(odvious I know ,but hay it's your green thing not mine).

Copper somethingorother, caused by seawater interacting with the connections and dezincing them then reacting with the copper, when power goes through. (I think it tends to happen most to the negative pin). Its the curse of all brass deckplugs. Once started it always seems to come back, no matter how often you clean and wrap watertight. Then the copper wire behind it starts to go black and fragile. Sooner or later you are going to have to change this plug. The best answer is to use deck glands and keep all your connections in the dry.

try silicon grease. I much prefer it for these jobs. Thoroughly clean, coat with the silicon, assemble. The silicon will scrape off on the contact surface allowing contact, but create an air and water tight seal thus preventing, or at least slowing down this problem
