How many of you are live aboards without realising it?

The following is from the MDL Marina Regs...

"The OWNER shall not themselves nor shall they permit any other person
to live aboard the BOAT at the MARINA. For the purposes of this
Regulation a person shall be deemed to be ‘living aboard’ a BOAT if they
shall spend more than 8 nights aboard in any period of 30 days."

So no more than 8 nights in 30 days or else you're a live aboard and not welcome.
 
there used to be quite a few L/Aboards in a MDL Thames marina not that many years ago.

Airline pilots, oil industry offshore, one-month-Hanover -- one-month-in-London types, and several for whom the Monday night through till Friday morning was normal. The marina knew of them and provided it was not continuous, did not seem to mind.

Weekend boaters were quite happy to have someone nearby keeping an eye open for birds nesting on the swimplatform, and so on.

They provide free security & as long as the boats are not floating junk yards fine by me
 
In Hythe marina I had been sleeping on my boat (not living in the generally accepted manner) for several weeks in a PRIVATE berth belonging to a marina house owner (with permission of course!!). I was forced off ... not by MDL but by the RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION. Apparently sleeping on board is limited to 3 nights whatever the circumstances even if you OWN the berth.
 
Blame the local Government jobsworths in Planning

It is normally a condition of a planning permission intended prevent people living on board..

With housing costs so ridiculous, especially anywhere near London, many people try to live on board as a way of having somewhere affordable to stay..

The Local Government response is, of course, to ban it instead of adressing the cause of the whole problem. which is of course the fact they don't do the job they are paid for and provide housing to meet the needs of the community..

And before folks jump up and down. This is an area of some knowledge on my part as I used to work in the system and saw its failings from inside..
 
I think what is bad is the fact you pay for a mooring and as other people have said, as long as the boat is tidy there shouldn't be a problem..
I have a marina berth and there are boats here that are always connected to the mains. But if the problem with the marina is electric being used so much, lower the base rate & add a meter..! I'd be happy with that:)
 
I lived aboard in an MDL marina while I was fitting out. Their attitude was that it was fine as long as I had a shore address to send the bill to.

Rates / Council Tax etc. Not the Marinas fault but the local Councils money grabbing and demanding "rates" on liveaboard vessels or so I am lead to believe....;)
