Have MDL reduced their fuel prices in line with the reducing wholesale price? I noticed last week that the pumps at our marina on the Thames were still showing £1.21, which hasn't changed for some time.

Hadn't thought of that. But how come forecourts can change pricing overnight? They are not emptying their tanks that quickly.

Typical garage tankage will need refilling at least once a week. But the real reason it changes quickly with them is competition. The big players drop their price, everyone nearby will drop theirs as well. Marina fuel points have a much smaller throughput, so stock lasts longer, especially at this time of year and there's less competitive pressure, so prices won't change as fast.

We are a shell retailer, we sell 11m litres a year and require a tanker delivery daily, but as we are an owner operator site we can chose what price we sell. Obviously we would be bloody daft not to price match the shell owned site that happens to be opposite us.. However sometimes we are not able because shell has a policy to price match the nearest supermarket fuel retailer, whereas the price we pay for fuel is set by the daily platts pricing index. Sometimes if we price matched we would be selling every litre at a loss. Fortunately that has only happened for a few weeks this year. But as others have said slow moving independent fuel retailers like those on the water this time of year will pay for each fill and that fuel currently sitting in their tanks will owe them dearly.

I paid £1.21 per litre for petrol from Port Hamble MDL yesterday which is their 'cost' price and it has been that amount for a while. In my experience the only time that MDL are close to forecourt prices is when the forecourt price goes up and there is a lag before the MDL price increases. When the fuel price is dropping we don't get the benefit very quickly.

Lymington yacht haven over 300 litres with 5% berthholders discount is 89p at the moment :encouragement:

I have allways found them one cheapest and usually fill up there when on passage through Solent, open 24hrs is handy too as I'm often there late at night
