MDL expansion

Re: Myopic capitalism

No I can't imagine Sir Humphrey being so imaginative! Sometimes we play by the rules far too much!

Re: Myopic capitalism

Please preach louder to British councils etc. I think the French have got many things right that why so many Brits with enough intelligence to make money are selling up and moving there.

But I do wish people would not keep having a go at MDL. They have got so upset I got a letter this morning telling me that to moor my boat with them this year equates to £200 per week!

Which way is France?

Re: Doing sums

If you go to a marina in central Stockholm or Helsinki, where land is very expensive, you will get a berth for around £15 (Stockholm) or £10 Helsinki, both in the centre of the city.

So let's say that high land costs on the Solent should mean that we should increase our notional marina fee from £10 to maybe £12 or even £13 a night, but not £40!

Re: Myopic capitalism

Please allow a slight rounding up but its £9750 inc VAT for a 43' boat at Hamble Point Marina. Charge is based on actual measurement of length I am assured!

I was surprised when my previous Dufour 38 Classic was measured as 39' 3" but it was to the end of its CQR - must check their tape some time!

Many years ago I did once work on a construction site where we were sent an instruction to stop buying new steel tapes and always use the site tape repair/splicing kit. 3 months later we were sent an instruction to bin all the tape repair kits. We all wondered why. We later heard on the grapevine that on a site in central London a tape was repaired but lost 1' about the 34' mark. Cost many thousands to put right the setting out errors. Now I know where that Bl**dy tape went - MDL!

Re: Doing sums

Interestingly I have just heard that Brighton Marina are losing several (100) berths because they are building houses on top of them.

Re: Doing sums

I don't think it's anything like 100. It's the berths that the charter fishing boats use; about 20 or so maximum. A new lifeboat station and yacht club are being added as well.

Besides there is ample space at Brighton to put in more berths to replace them.

Cherbourg v. Gosport

Tarrifs for 2007. Daily rate for a 12m boat with 6 crew and 1 shower per crew member ( I accept that many forumites will in fact share a shower, especially some of our northern cousins!) Gossie £30, Frogggies £28.93.
Not really such a big difference, especially when you think that Gossie pontoons will take even our heavier posters.

Re: Cherbourg v. Gosport

I'haven't come across a marina in northern Europe outside the UK that charges anything like that, but I suspect that it's cross-Channel Solent yachts that may be driving prices up in Cherbourg...?

Yearly:
Gosport (Rosbif) £5,188.53 (with early payment discount!)
Cherbourg (froggies) £1,824.00

How many showers does £3,364.53 buy you?

Re: Cherbourg v. Gosport

What does the price matter when you can't get a berth. 4 year waiting list at Chanteryne? Space available at Gossie. List closed at St Vaast, ditto Granville. Planning wars prevented development of Barfleur, sounds a bit like Blighty really

The marina tell me its 100 - I'm sure they'll be delighted to know they've got it wrong /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

The point is that despite them being just as full as the UK marinas, they don't appear to be trying to charge ludicrous prices!

Re: Cherbourg v. Gosport

And an interesting side issue is how that is damaging the boating market generally..... we've put a cap on the max boat size we are going to buy, not because of handling etc etc, but because of the cost of berthing her.... what we'll save will pay 3 or 4 years berthing fees...... but ultimately cost the industry 16 or 17k.....
