Hi Guys
I am having problems cold-starting my MD6A ( I dont have pre-heat) and have had the compression checked. It appears that new piston rings would be a good idea. The original instruction book says compression should read 20-24 kp/sq.cm. and I got readings of 28 bar for one and 17.5 for the other. Can anybody tell me how bar relate to kp/sq.cm???
I have been advised to change the big-end bearings at the same time and of course a complete gasket set, and would appreciate an address or web link that would be able to provide me with these items.
All replies welcome.
Many thanks in advance.

see <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.onlineconversion.com/pressure.htm>http://www.onlineconversion.com/pressure.htm</A>

for conversion.

are you sure your gague reads kp/sq cm, as I thought kp= kilopascal which I think is a pressure measurement in its own right

Hi David
Thanks for your post. In fact the gauge reads in bar. It was the original manual which gave the correct pressure reading in kp/sq cm, but it also gave it in psi, and when I used your link to convert, it turned out that the difference between kp/sq cm and bar is negligible.
I still don't know where to find the parts though.....

Be prepared for some horrendous prices. I did the same thing on my MD2B a while back and the piston rings were £66 per cylinder! I can't remember how much the big end shells and gaskets were but they were very expensive. Expensive is relative but a couple of years ago I bought piston rings for a Rover V8 and they were £34 for 8 cylinders.
I have since been advised that one may be able to get generic parts especially piston rings. If you or anyone else has achieved this I'm sure many of us who are struggling to keep our old Volvos alive would welcome info about suppliers etc.

Regards................Andrew
