I have recently fitted a Volvo Penta MD2B diesel to my boat. I have read, that this engine will accept the fitment of a rev counter. If this is indeed the case, where the hell does it go! I have inspected the engine from top to bottom and no obvious location for a sensor or cable exists.
Can anyone please help?

See #21 HERE

And part #38 HERE

Plug #37 should be in the hole in the periphery of the cover

It senses the rotation of the gear on the hand starter

Right............. so the sensor which is obviously electric and not mechanical, is situated somewhere near the starting handle area? I assume then, that a genuine Volvo Penta device must be used. Thanks for your help, I will investigate further.

It'll be expensive if you buy a brand new Volvo instrument. An entire mortuary full of arms and legs I should think.

Consider a Tiny Tach. The diesel engine type has a sensor that clips onto one of the injector feed pipes.

You can google for it as well as I can.
