I've looked into this some more and come to the conclusion that the "sewing machine" sound is coming from the Bosch VE injector pump. You can hear it here, with just the injector pump on a test bench, driven by an electric motor, so no other engine noise present. The sound is less pronounced on new pumps, but seems to be well within acceptable range, so apparently no reason for concern.

The Bosch VE is a true engineering marvel that is as complex as the entire rest of the engine. There's a vast amount of information on them out there, including original Bosch training videos from the 70s and rebuild instructions.

Hopefully that won't be needed anytime soon

My dad had a wonderful device for this, the needle holder and diaphragm of a wind-up gramophone with a rod in place of the needle. You can also get Mechanics' Stethoscopes

Another alternative to the listening stick is a length of hose, stick one end in your ear ** and the other around area of the offending noise.

** Please don't try this at home with very small diameter tubing or you may find it protrudes from the opposite side ear and you won't be able to hear anything.
