Having found oil in the water pump on the boat I have narrowed the issue down to a cracked water channel in the gear box. Apparently I can circumvent this cooling channel as it is not strictly necessary in our cooler waters (at least until I can get the gearbox out, split it and repair the channel-probably next season).

In the meantime does anyone know roughly what temperature is an acceptable operating temperature for the gearbox? I thought I would buy a laser thermometer to check the temp intermittently. Alternatively is there anything you can bond to the surface of the gearbox to monitor the temperature, maybe an alarm?

It is not the gearbox body you need to monitor but the thrust bearing. This is in the back cover and a thermal gun is fine in the short term.
