My MD1 seems to have droped all its oil in the bilges.
Does anyone have any idea where I should start looking for a problem?

While it was running or while standing idle?

I'm not familiar with the MD1 but I know the MD 11 ( in a friends boat) pretty well and thats much like a double MD1.

So yes I would expect to find a sump drain plug right hand side bottom rear corner and socket headed and facing rearwards, I think. I dont recall the size as the allen key to fit is in the toolbox on board but probably about 6 or 8 mm.

Your problem is most likely because the plug tightens onto an aluminium washer. A bit of salt round that and it corrodes way. A copper washer would not be a good idea because that would result in the plug and the surrounding crankcase corroding. So either try and get an Al one and replace it regularly or do as I last did and use a fibre washer. Some cars have a plastic washer so one of those would be another choice if you can find one the right size.

I hope that helps, the plug is not easy to find if the access is poor and things are a bit mucky, even when you know its there!

Re: correction

delete "and facing rearwards, I think" as on reflection I think not!

Re: correction

Thanks for info. Im hopping its the sump plug. As this would be easier to repare than a cracked sump.

Re: correction

A cracked sump is very unlikely as it is a substantial casting integral with the crankcase, unless its been whacked with something pretty heavy.

Also look at the crankcase side cover plate (RHS again) but I can't remember if it extends below the static oil level.

Let us know what you find won't you.

Re: VicS

I removed the sump plug today. It was a quite slack. there was no washer so Im
assuming it coroded away. I fitted a fiber washer, filled up with oil and all seems well. I've got to say its not an easy job.
Thanks for the info,

Don
