At least some of the problems I've been having with lack of power on my MD1 has been traced to a missing spring on the governor.

Volvo, in its infinite wisdom has decide that it won't supply most parts for this engine, otherwise I might be able to fix it and keep it running for another 30 years, rather than buy a new engine from them. :-((( I love Volvo ... NOT!

Since a new engine would cost almost as much as my boat's worth, can anyone help me with a pair of springs, or possibly a complete governor?

Apparently there are two types of governor, my type has a pair of springs, one for each weight, the other has one spring between the weights. They appear to be interchangeable as a complete unit.

If all else fails, take the other spring off and ask an engineering supplier to match it as best as they can.

It may not be 100% correct, but its better than buying a new engine. If its too strong you will get smoke/overloading. If its too loose you will just fail to get maximum speed.

The engine is robust, so as long as you get it nearly right it should be Ok.

Historically most Volvo springs were made in Sheffield. It would be worth doing a Google search on local spring suppliers, engineering suppliers and agricultural engineers to see if they have something similar.
I have got round a number of spares problems like this - the latest being a complete new Dynastart for £180 via LSUK of Leeds.
