I have a right job trying to seal up my MD1 fuel filter bowl after chaning the element. This is becasue the seal drops down before I can replace the bowl. I have tried using grease and vaseline as glue but it does not hold long enough. Any tips or smart wheezes would be appreciated

Had the same problem with my MD5 until I discovered that the seal wedges into a groove which could only be seen using a mirror and torch. Once wedged into the groove, it was held quite firmly - at least for long enough to centre & tighten the bowl. Might not be the same on the MD1 of course .... and, if it is, you may already know about the groove.
Otherwise, have you tried sitting the seal on top of the bowl, holding it there with a turn of masking tape around the top edge of the bowl - top edge of tape NOT above the top of the seal - tightening the bowl until the seal is just firm against the mating face, remove masking tape & finish tightening ?

Did you remove the old seal?

If not forget it this time and use the old seal.

If you have removed the old seal, first make sure the new seal is the right size - cross section is as important as the diameter. Once you have established that the old seal is out, and that the new seal is either correct orthe only one you can get, I would suggest that builders/plumbers silicon sealr will do what you want - but the old seal must be removed.
