Does anyone know the details of what's needed for this bit of kit?
I've offered to make one and get it sent up to a mate who's going through coding inspection next week but I can't find any info of what's required.
I've searched through the blue code details and spent hours online and come up zip.
Apparently it's to aid recognition from helo in a rescue situation.

Person is in a no mobile signal area now so unable to check with him.

Size? Colours? yacht name only? or yacht name and call sign? Call sign only?

Any help much appreciated.
Cheers

I think this is a black on orange banner the size of half a double bedsheet or more. The black lettering is your radio callsign. Goes on the coachroof for helio recognition. Don't know the exact sizings.

Yes, I've met/spoken with Frank. Summer of 1994 on Jersey. He was out for a bike ride

A quick call to the surveyor should give you the answer that they will accept.

Who said this was required?

From my experience in coding this wasn't needed on a 40' yacht so not sure where you got the requirement from?

My mate has been told by the surveyor that he needs one. He's only going for cat 2, nothing special.
I need to get this on a courier on Monday if poss so he gets it in time, so can't get hold of surveyor today - even if I knew who he was!
I've heard of it in the past but have no idea of requirement or details but, if the surveyor says he needs one to pass the inspection, then he needs one.

I assumed I'd get the info from a code book I've got or if not then from online so didn't press for more detail as the phone line was bad. Now he's out of contact until it's too late.

Thanks for info up to now.

It's required. If you have the ID (Saill Number) painted each side on the foredeck, you don't need it. The sail traing yachts, commercial, RYA and non RYA registered, had a foredeck sized orange sail cloth banner with sail number on it. I have seen it on charter yachts too.

Don't need it if you got spray dodgers with boat name on. The only time I had one made was for a motor boat. Was about the size of a dodger(!) with ships radio call sign, as others suggest, Black on Orange.

'Identification from Air'

Good luck with the inspection, its normally straightforward!

Thank you 'Boots.
So if I do an 8ft x 3ft orange banner with his call sign in black (no sail no.) that should be ok d'ya think?

Yes, that should do it, or a burning barrel of tar. :-)

and you do the yacht's name or callsign by smoke signals ?

Update:
He didn't need the sign in the end.
He was told by another surveyor (who was doing another boat - RYA inspection) that he needed it but apparently for Cat 2 it's not required.
The initial surveyor failed the RYA boat with some incredulous reasoning, such as the date stamp on the gas pipe is an expiry date, not a manufacture date!
Anyway, mates boat passed so all good.
Thanks for advice.
PS. If anyone wants an 8' x 3' orange banner with 5 random characters on it, I know where there's one going cheap :)
