MBY What Now Skip? This month's scenario

"I'd advise him to load the whole thing on to a truck,"
Yup me too....
Lets say those bellows rubbers have been stiffening for three years and the previous owner knowing he was flogging the boat did not change them when he should have so poss 5/6 years old.Even if the boat does not stop floating you are filling up the u/j and transom shield bearings with top quality sea water so that then gets into the bellhousing and gives the starter motor a nice salty rinse...
Truck It.

So much for the adventurous spirit of this great seafaring nation! 20 miles in good weather - after a thorough check over and with a host of safety gear (VHF, Flares, etc, etc) get off in plenty of time, with support boat if prudent and get the job done - just pray to neptune that you don't fall off the edge of the world - there be monsters!

Re: MBY What Now Skip? This month\'s scenario

I would suggest going down to the boat the day before and giving it a good checking over together with the owner. I would be direct with the owner and explain that depending on what we found we would either do the trip the following day or if major concerns emerged then the trip would need to be postponed.
This would be a chance for the owner to get to know his boat and systems without being under pressure. I would expect to know if it was ok or not after a few hours. As others have said I would include my own safety and nav aids in my rucksack.
This process is teaching the new owner the responsibilites that come with boat ownership. Have fun with your boat but show the sea some respect.

treat her like a lady , do not keep the revs at the same for a great distance, vary them a bit ... then sit back and enjoy the ride.

I presume we would all treat a lady that way...

A sensible response!! Yay!!

FFS - 20Nm can be no distance at all, it could be across the ocean if conditions are wrong - so don't go in the wrong conditions.

Check the boat out yourself, run the engines up with load in the current marina, take it out for a shorter spin if possible - and have someone else on call who could bring out your boat or register with seastart. As long as the engine gives it drive and it doesn't sink there really isn't much to worry about ... a HH VHF will cover you if the fixed on is on the blink. If you can't navigate 20Nm without instruments (20Nm near where you berth) then there is something seriously wrong with your knowledge ...

Jeeze - this guy probably got a bargin because he can't afford the luxury of "Professionals" checking and charging for everything - I'm sure he/you can get the thing into suitable shape for running around locally...
