As it all seems a bit quiet, and I'me off to St Vaas tomorrow. I thought I would pose this question. When I first got into boating I bought MBY, then I started buying MBM as well. The fact is I find MBM a better read so I subscribe, but I always buy MBY as well.

What do you all think and are there any other publications you would recommend.

I also notinced (in the dentist yesterday) (checkup) (filling 15th May), that the Yachty type mags have loads more adverts from your Jimmy Green type establishments with bargain this and cut price that. Does anyone subscribe to a Rag and stick mag for information?

Oh yes after St Vaas, Cherbourg and Alderny if weather permits.

See you.

Sunds like fun, hope the weather holds.

I just want my boat back in the water ;-(

MBM seems more practical, praps MBY more aspirational, tho there is overlap around 30-60 foot boats.

However, in my opinion the standard of writing is much better in MBY than that writing what is generally written in MBM what with them having much better writers who have experience just the same or maybe the same or thereabouts, but more able to express the things that they want to say more directly and succinctly and in a way that seem quite a lot more understandable and easier to read if you get my drift.

Good luck with the trip. Sounds great!

I find them fairly close on buy MBY has a slightly more amusing editorial style in parts - the one thing that did wind me up a while back was all the mags (MBM/MBY/PBO/YM etc) seemed to be rotating gear tests for a couple of months so wouldn't see any new gear just the same reviews in different mags.

I regularly read PBO as the practical how to fix it stuff is interesting...though a bit too saily at times, they also have the Jimmy Green type ad's

The MBM Cruise Club is off to Cherbourg on Sunday (with 26 boats....), Alderney and St Peter Port on Monday - will we see you there? After that, we're off to Jersey, before coming back via Cherbourg on the following Sunday.

We monitor Ch 77 - and I will be with Tom Gregory (Cruise Leader) onboard MBM's boat Calm Voyager - a Sealine 37. Give us a call if you can.

MBM v MBY? MBM is practical, MBY is dreaming....IMHO - but I too, buy both. I also take Passage Maker from the states. An excellent mag, which takes forever to read - it's packed with articles.

I take MBM and PBO (for the 'how to articles) but Boat Mart is an excellent (and cheap!)read...full of useful ads.

Re: None of \'em

I don't really buy MBM or MBY much now. They got to a stage where it was much the same thing rehashed month after month, and any way who needs too with you lot discussing the latest hot topic, i get a clearer picture anyway. I do buy Boat Mart occasionaly and am quiet suprised to find P Caplan's articals follow in MBM around 4-5 months after they've appeared in Boat Mart. Rigging a rib tender for one.

The majority of the mags are ads anyway, and what is there does'nt always interest me anyhow. I do have a flick when in smiths to see if its worth buying. I would'nt take a sub tho.

Have been reading MBY for last 28 years but have to say this maybe my last as it just seems to be losing the plot.
However MBM gets better and better.
Also take PBO for the adverts as it seems more chandlery suppliers frequent PBO when you are looking for something and the hands on articles are excellent.
Problem is with all these Direct Debits from IPC is which one is MBY to cancel!

Re: losing the plot?

do explain and/or let rip re mby

(declaration of tinsy bit of interest: i do a bit of writing for MBY now and again, hopefully slightly better than my hopeless text above, "joke" ignored or missed by all..)

Read Your article....

Hi Matts,

Just read the thread.. and was gonna say you may be a tad biased... being an occasional writer for MBY and all.....

For my 2 pennorth worth (all i can spare now.. i own a boat!) i buy PBO and MBM... if i have read them quickly.. i then buy MBY also. I agree with Piers, MBY a bit "dream world" but it does have a better and more educated style of writing. It's just the boats are a bit "BMW" - Beyond my wage....

MBM - good all rounder
PBO - Usefull tips and handy adverts for shopping around!

Anyway... carry on having fun with the Leopard and keep up the literary skills!

Craig.

Re: losing the plot?

Well who are they aiming at?

Obviously the Uk economy is doing much better than I thought!

It seemed to be a sudden change almost overnight, roughly January 2001 I seem to remember, we all signed up another years subs at the London Show quite oblivious and then wham, it changed overnight into a Millionaires Exchange and Mart. Too late to cancel the subs then.

I have renewed this year in the vain hope that eventually the sales will drop and they will come back down to earth but it doesnt seem to be happening.

Its a shame, theres a lot of years in that mag and the readership deserve better.

Re: CJ MBY vs MBM

Like you I subscribe to MBM but also end up buying MBY cos it comes out usually a week earlier than
my MBM arrives in the post, and by then I'm getting desperate for a read. Agree with some of the other
posts in that MBM more practical MBY dreamy but its nice to dream is'nt it. Or in TCM's case the dream has
become reality...........

I sub to both MBY and MBM and I really look forward to MBM every month.

Although I enjoy reading MBY mega rich boats articles, I think they are over doing it and should at least think of the more affordable boating. If they carry on showing boats with £800,000 price tags then I guess I might as well cancel MBY and buy a mag more dedicated to it.

MBM seems to have a nice balance to cater for all budgets.

Well I have read all the letters to date and I find this a very interesting subject!
I have subscribed to MBM for several years now and I am sorry to say that since Kim left as editor MBM has got rather stale in my view! It may be because I have been reading it for too long, but I used to read it completely from cover to cover, I just couldnt wait for it to drop through my letter box, but now I find it difficult to find much of any interest in it. In contrast I signed up for MBY at Earls Court this year and I cant get enough of it! The articles are well written and the photography breathtaking. I think its great and cant wait for it every month. Perhaps its just because its new to me but I think its a far better production all round. It would be a dull old world if we all thought the same wouldnt it?
