Up to the forumites. It's always been a forumite 'meet' rather than anything official, but some of these events are getting pretty big now, and sponsorship by MDL has aided considerably in making this event happen

i'll second BS's comments here.

interestingly we would never have envisaged the level of attendence / support in year one, or for that matter year two either but MDL (as an example) have illustrated how a commercial company can be involved to everyone's benefit and there is no need to rule out the involvement of others 'on principle'.

To me the biggest question has to be whether to effectively establish the event as a Mercury one with a third year or keep the date and format but move to another venue - In this I wouldn't go far from that general area Yarmouth/Lymington/Cowes/Hamble/Southampton giving sheltered water access for Solent based boats (despite being Poole based myself!)

Don't much care if the venue changes, but I think we should stick to early season. We're starting much earlier now (or maybe not actually stopping, thanks to heating), but last year's Mercury do gave us an extra month on our usual season just by making us get out at the start of May.

I've read all these comments and agree with some. However the proof of the pudding...... This year my kids 13,13,15 have actually asked if next years holiday could be on an MBM crusie in company. Nuff said!

Thanks to everyone who took the time to reply. Based on the replies it seems that in general an MBM cruise is just right for us. Without being over confident we're really keen to get more out of the boat next season. An organised cruise sounds the perfect way of making a start. The fact that we can do it in company with the added assurance that there's other people around to ask for advice / help makes me feel 100% happier.

For those of you who asked, my kids are 13, 6 and 4 and we're based in Cobbs at Poole.

Next job, re-write the christmas list to include all the extra safety gear required for offshore cruising.

Re: Can Skipper the Westie come too please???

Nick

We did have a dog with us on the Paris cruise this year. The answer is that as well as having all the correct paperwork etc, the dog needs a vets visit just before returning home, on the Paris cruise this was done at Rouen, and can only return home via an approved port and by an approved transport company. This means that someone is gonna have to return across the Channel with the dog on a ferry. You cannot bring pets into the UK on your own boat, even if you come into an approved port.

Excellent as I am sure the MBM cruises are, of necessity they must be limited in number and the one that appeals to you most will almost surely be the one that you are not able to join.

Most yacht clubs also offer the opportunity to cruise with others, either in an official club cruise in company, or through the medium of meeting other club members with whom you would be happy to spend 2 week holiday.

I have organised several club cruises from our club on the Upper Thames, both to the continent, France and Holland, and the Essex and Suffolk coast. They have all been thoroughly enjoyable and I fully intend continuing to use this medium. Most of the Thames clubs do similar cruises and I am sure the coastal clubs do the same and almost certainly more often.

Well done Kim and the MBM team but don't forget the other clubs.

dont rule out the 'informal ones' too - Capt'n Wiggo heads West; Col's capers; Weymouth and bust (courtsey of Jimi) all got an airing here sometime this year and your boat would have been well suited.
A number seem to head over to Cherbourg or St Peter Port at the slightest wiff of decent weather.
Look forward to meeting up on the water around Poole anyhow
